WAR WHOOP
April I 1074
The Real
Truth About
Bourbon Street
(EDITOR'S NOTE: Anne
Holland nnd Shirley McKcc
spent their spring hrenk nt n
Knppa Dcltn Pi convention in
New Orleans. Ordinarily the
truth nbout such a trip would
not be printed in the War
Whoop hut since this is an
April Fool's edition Miss Hol-
land decided to tell all in the
form of a letter to her
mother.)
Denr Mother
The truth about Bourbon
Street is that 1 got pinched by a
strip tease bar. No the bar
didn't do it some weirdo walk-
ing down the street did.
NOW you understand that
we did not go into the striptease
bar we just peaked slightly.
Shirley found a bar named
after her Crazy Shirley's and 1
found a street named after
me St. Ann's. Of course they
misspelled it as usual. I didn't
walk down that street much
though it made me feci pecul-
iar and besides we hadn't seen
all of Bourbon Street yet.
WE ATE at the Court of Two
Sisters (Bourbon Street side)
where the waiter assured us
that the Godfather sandwich
was funky the only good thing
nbout it was that a glass of wine
came with it. So we got some-
thing else because we're good
little girls. Occasionally.
While we were there I saw a
black panther walking on one of
the verandas above the street
the animal kind. No it was not
something I ate. The waiter
who sorto took a shine to Shirley
said that some of the more
eccentric residents of New Or-
leans' French Quarter had some
rather odd pets. Believe me
some of the waiters on Bourbon
Street were rather strange
themselves.
We went to a real dinky place
named Your Father's Mous-
tache where we battled against
the seductive temptations of
Bourbon Street but 1 won't tell
you which ones.
THE bartenders wore red and
white striped shirts suspenders
garters and styrofoam straw
hots. The band played Dixieland
jazz and the audience song
along and clapped while the bar
tenders danced on the bar.
It was a truly great experience
to walk down that street Mom.
It made Shirley and me aware of
the sins and corruptions that
run rampant through the streets
of our big cities and pull our
children down into the horrify-
ing pits of evil toward destruc-
tion. AND just think- for one whole
night Shirley and I were
privileged to be a part of that
great enterprise. It was really
funky.
