K. I am hwdmg 100 shares of
American Airline* and 80 shares
each of Eastern Air Lines and
and United Air Lines. T bought
these for long-term investment
but they have been acting poor-
ly since. What is wrong with the
industry, and what is the out-
look T Should 1 sell these stock*
or continue to hold them?
A. The airline industry's first
quarter reports are not en-
couraging reading. W bile re-
venues of the industry'* big
three, American. Eastern and
United, we’re up about 10 per
cent, their earnings dipped an
average 33 per cent* Their stock
prices reflect this poor showing.
Other lines have also posted
poor results. Capital, Northeast
and TWA are still operating at
deficits as they were a year be-
fore. . •
One of the biggest problems
of the industry Is high costs, and
the cost-squeeze has become pro-
gressively worse. For example,
the one-eent gasoline increase
in January added almost 6 per
cent to the airlines' fuel bills.

airlines' poor fare structure.

considered. Other improvement
may come from the Civil Aer-

scale study of the airlines. It
is hoped that the CAB will re-
cognize the industry’s problems
and evolve a better policy of
compensating for cost increases

A- You have evidenty given
some thought to building your
present portfolio, dividing it up
between income and growth se-
- curities. The result is' a com-
bination of four good stocks.

General Tire should enjoy ex-
