Robert Vargas, senior engineering and physics major, has been a member of the St. Mary's
community for four years. He said that the university has been neglected of certain aspects of
the community amenities.
Vargas utilizes the school's gymnasium on a regular basis; however, he said that it lacks
one important feature: a sound system, which, according to the complaints of Vargas and oth-
er students, reduces the quality of the Alumni Athletics and Convocation Center (AACC).
Vargas met with Student Government Association (SGA) president, junior Jose Freeh, and
Vice President for Student Development Kathy Sisoian to create a proposal to purchase and
install a sound system that can be heard in both the weight room and possibly the pool area.
"Having a sound system will bring more students to the gym and in turn bring students
together," said Vargas.
Freeh has been aware of the growing need for a sound system in the AACC; he said it
looks bad when people are forced to take laptops and radios with them to the gym.
Freeh cited the two main complaints from the students as problems with the TV's and old
music videos.

Presidential Award
recipients honored
By DOMINIQUE VARGAS
NEWS EDITOR
Each year, a select group of summer, winter and spring graduates are
honored as recipients of the 2006-07 Presidential Award.
According to the "Student Awards and Recognitions" section of
the St. Mary's Web site, the recipients are chosen for their "academic,
leadership and service qualities."
In order to receive the award, students must be nominated by faculty
and staff; then, the nominees can proceed to the application process.
A committee, comprised of faculty and staff, is responsible for
evaluating each applicant and choosing winners.
