Concern for The Future of
Texas Calls for Taking Stand
Never before in Tana* history haa a
atate political race attracted auch national
attention aa the preaent governor'* race.
The eyea of the nation will he turned to*
warda Texas Saturday. The outcome of the
governor'* race will have grave signifi-
cance on the national level aa well an in
Testa*.
A YARBOROUGH VICTORY will mean
that Texaa la "in the hag" ae far as the Li-
beral Democratic Party la concerned, ft
will mean Texaa will he delivered In the
1990 presidential year to the northern Li-
beral party boaaea lock, gock and barrel.
Texaa will automatically revert back to the
same humble, hat-in-hand atate of the pant.
Texaa won't have to be courted, or favored
or given any consideration by the Liberal*.
Our independence will be gone. We'll be
"in the bag" for the Northern Liberals.
A Yarborough victory will mean increa-
sing federal encroachment on states rights.
Panola County haa already felt this with
the PPC freeze on gaa prices.
THE NORTHERN UNION LEADERS
will take their cue from the outcome of the
governor's race, tinder the protective ad-
ministration of Ralnh Yarborough, who is
obligated body and soul to them for their
support, labor unrest In Texaa will make
the Port Arthur and Center, Texaa strikes
seem like pink tea affairs In comparison.
Northern dictatorial union leaders will
flex their muscles and move into Texas.
THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION POR
THE ADVANCEMENT OP THE COLOR-
ED RACE will get their cue from the out-
come of the governor'* race. Assuming
that Hr. Yarborough is a southerner and
favors segregation, how can he fail to show
lovalty and favor to those, regardless of
color, who put him in office 7 If Yarbo-
rough is elected the MAACP will Interpret
it as the green light for continued agita-
tion and unroot. Oar former amicable re-
lation between the two races is going to be
very strained, we fear,
PANOLA COUNTY AND THE OTHER
33 GAS producing counties in Texas have
more at stake than other counties in Tex-
as Who will fight for the congressional le-
gislation curtailing the power of the fede-
ral Power Commission and release their
tdrnngle hold on price of gas? Who has
fought the battle of similar nature before
. . . and won? Yarborough, on .the other
hand, as a loyal liberal, can't fight against
this or any other federal enernaehmeni
and still comply with liberal party princi-
ples of a rtrong centralized federal guv.
ernment.
OUR PANOLA COUNTY ROYALTY
OWNERS are going to pay for the two bil-
lion dollar give-away program Yarborough
has promised He has stated repeatedly on
television, radio, in circulars and newspa-
per ads that he is going to tax natnrnI gas
to finance his progrmtn. We know that the
Supreme Court haa blocked every attempt
to pass any such tax to the consumer or
pipe lines. So our Panola County royalty
owners will be the one* who are taxed
WE MENTION THESE PEW ITEMS,
not beeaose we believe it will change any-
one's mind at the la*t minute. We don't
think it will We mention them primarily
so me will he on record in case Yarborough
should win. We view the future under a
Yarborough administration w.th grave
concern We do not want anv readers of
•hi- new-paper ever to point their finger
in or*r direction and rlainv we didn't in-
form them and that we didn't take a sf*nd.
REGARDLESS OP THE OUTCOME SA-
TURDAY, we want to he on record ns sup-
porting the re-election of Allan Shivers for
the good of Panola County and Texas . . .
and America

The Negro's Letter
Speculation has been running high here
about whether the letter printed In the
Watchman last week from "An Informed
Negro Voter and Citizen of Panola Coun-
ty,rwas really written by a negro.
Ordinarily we would not have publish-
ed an unsigned letter. 11 Is never a good
policy to do so , , . as Is evidenced by the
speculation about the author of the letter.
But we felt It more Important In this In-
stance to let thp people know of these
views expressed than to stick to our form-
er rigid policy,
Many are of the opinion the letter was
writtex by a white person for purely poli-
tical reasons... to keep the negro vote li-
ned up for Yarborough Hot we do not
think so. We believe it was written bv r
negro. The letter was written in anger. The
reason we say this Is because of the time
element. The editorial the writer of the let-
ter criticized was published in our Thurs-
day edition. The letter was written Thurs-
day afternoon or night because We receiv-
ed It In the first mall the very next morn-
ing. We believe that If a white man had
written It for political gain, he would have
waited a dav or so and studied It ea ref till v
before mailing. Furthermore, the text of
the letter conform* to the Ideas that have
been spread by the National Association
for the Advancement of the fn lured Pace
The temper and tone of three anonvmou*
phone calls to the editor from negroes, in
the past 10 days, furl her convinces Us that
a negro wrote the letter. Two of the un-
known callers, incidentally, Issued yelled
threats of "I'll be seeing von."
We will sav, however, that we do pot
believe the sentiments expressed in the let-
ter or the phone calls ere those of the ma-
jority of the negroes of Panola f'onnty. Af
least we certainly hope not.
All we know Is that the negro vote in-
fluenced the outcome of the governor's
race in Panola f'ountv, A simple bit of »-
rithmetic can prove tht* Take the known
number of poll fax paid bv white and col-
ored. plus the over-age, both w hite atuPeo-
lored, and allow a hundred vote?* on" way
or another for the margin of error, com-
pare to the governor'* race ia 1992 and
there you have if?
Which means Panola County whites no
longer deride the outcome of races in this
county. The negro vote swings the balance
of power?
