■ Board president
cites ‘pending’
status of grant
funding among
reasons for closure
BY ELESKA AUBESPW

Financial woes have finally taken a toll
on the New Horizon Family Center, causing
the nonprofit organization to officially shut
down operations and close its doors for
good Monday evening.
As of Tuesday, all but one family had
been transferred from New Horizon’s emer-
gency shelter to agencies in neighboring
communities that provide similar shelter-
type services, said Baytown attorney
Randall B. Strong, who is president of the
agency’s board of directors.
“I’m sad to see this happen because I
know from the number of clients that we
have served that there is a need for this
facility,” Strong said. “But it takes money
to run and if the money is not there, we
won’t be able to operate. Victims of family
violence and sexual assault will have to find
somewhere else to go.”
A reason for the drastic move, in part, is
because the Health and Human Services
Commission and the Office of the Attorney
General had awarded New Horizon grant
contracts for the 2012-2013 fiscal year, but

ExxonMobil recognizes Anderson

ExxonMobil, at its annual holiday
reception Tuesday evening, contin-
ued a 26-year tradition in naming its
“Refiner of the Year,” with this
year’s honor going to Ronnie
Anderson. -
The Refiner of the Year, unlike
what its name would suggest, is not
awarded necessarily to a refiner, but
rather to an outstanding community
volunteer. In presenting the award,
Steve Cope, manager of the
ExxonMobil Baytown Refinery,
said, “The recipient is usually a
long-term resident whose volunteer
activities have made exemplary and
lasting contributions for the good of
our community.”
Cope went on to say that
Anderson has lived in the communi-
ty for 48 years, and has served as a
member of the city council and as
