Lady Rangers hope to
start anew in 21-5A play
BY GLENN SATTELL
sports@baytownsun.com
To quote Ross S. Sterling girls’ basket-
ball coach Laurie Welch, the 2011-112
season has been “a process.”
With a very young and inexperienced
group, the Lady Rangers have won just
four of 22 games heading into the District
21-5A season, which starts on Friday.
Sterling hosts North Shore at 7 p.m.
“We’ve got a tough one to start off
with,” Welch said of the district opener."
“They’re probably one of the strongest
teams in our district. We’ll just get after it
and see what can happen.
“I’ve got some young kids but we’ve
been getting a little better each game.
Hopefully, we’ll be ready to take them
on.”
Sterling dropped a 37-36 heartbreaker
to Pasadena in the pre-district finale
Tuesday.
“We made mistakes down the stretch
and it cost us the ballgame,” Welch said.
“We didn’t shoot well from the free-throw
line. So that’s always a place where you
can win or lose ballgames.”
Just two returning varsity players lead
Sterling into District 21-5A action. The
varsity roster includes three freshmen and
two sophomores to go along with three
juniors and four seniors.
Progress has been slow but steady with
the young group.
“I had some come in this year that want-
ed to play that didn’t play last year or I’ve
got some from JV,” Welch said. “So it’s.
been kind of a struggle getting all togeth-
to
a
process.”
Olivia Richard, a 5-foot senior point
guard, has had the weight of the team
er and the young players learning how
play at the varsity level. It’s been
placed on her shoulders.
“It’s a big job not only being a senior,
but she’s having to be the point guard
even though she’s really probably a two-
guard player,” Welch said. “She’s having
to play point guard because I just don’t
have anybody ready yet to step into that
position. So, she’s having to do quite a bit.
It’s been hard on her. I’ve been trying to
get others to step up and lead.”
Lacey Crenshaw has been a solid play-
er and a pleasant surprise this season.
“She didn’t play her sophomore or jun-
ior year, so she’s kind of been out of it a
couple of years,” Welch said. “Just with
her maturity and her athleticism, she’s
been able to do some nice things for us.”
Tatiana Arvie is another senior who has
come back to the program after not play-
ing last year.
“Starting out they’re kind of behind and
they’ve had to get some practices and
games underneath them to get back in the
groove of things coming back from vol-
leyball,” Welch said.
Ariel Gilbert has earned most of the
playing time out of the freshmen group.
“She’s got a real nice shot,” Welch said.
“She’s making progress and getting
some confidence.”
Freshman post Sidnee Land has also
contributed some good minutes, accord-
ing to Welch.
“She’s working on her strength and her
confidence as well,” Welch said. “They
just need to play and get that confidence.
They just can’t get that in practice. They
really need that game experience. That
group has really been solid so far.”
Sophomore Dominique Brown, a move-in
from A&M Consolidated, will be a factor
in the program as well, Welch said.
“She’s strong and athletic and plays
hard,” Welch said.

Sterling girls hope to challenge for 21-5A soccer crown
BY TODD HVEEM
sports@baytownsun.com'
The Ross S. Sterling Lady Rangers
have a shot to qualify for the Class 5A
girls’ state soccer playoffs for the fifth
straight season.
But head coach Renee Cosby would
love to see her multi-talented team do
more than qualify for the playoffs in
2012.
“We would like to win the district
title,” Cosby said. “I think we have a
good shot. But our district is very bal-
anced. It should be a very exciting race.”
Sterling finished second to Beaumont
West Brook in last year’s District 21-5A
chase after finishing 6-2-2 in conference
play. The Lady Rangers lost twice to West
Brook and tied La Porte twice.
The Lady Rangers then lost to Dobie 3-
1 in the first round of the Region III-5A
win a first-round play-
off game,” said Cosby, who is entering
her fourth year as the club’s head coach.
“We would like to try and do that this sea-
son, too.”
The Lady Rangers return eight players
from last year’s team, including top-flight
junior goalie Kristi Istre. The other
returners include forward Claudia
Premutico, midfielder Denise Chavez,
junior Bianca Torres, forward Lesyle
Uribe, defender Emily Diaz, defender Itza
Carrasco and defender Brooke Moore.
playoffs.
“We have yet to
Cosby said she also is excited about the
play of freshmen Vanessa Flores and
Daisy Mendoza.
“We are looking good right now,”
Cosby said,.“We have two great fresh-
men. I am really excited about the sea-
son.”
Sterling will open the season with a
home scrimmage against Eisenhower at 7
p.m. today. It also will take on Lee in a
scrimmage at 5' p.m. Tuesday before
going to the Galveston Lady Tors
Tournament on Jan. 12-14.
“Our goal this year is to go a little fur-
ther than last year,” Cosby said. “We want
to continue to be in the hunt for the dis-
trict title, but we also want to get past the
first round of the playoffs. If we can do
that, we will consider this season a suc-
cess.”
Cosby said the Lady Rangers will play
a tough non-district schedule.
“We will take on Lee and GCM, we are
going to the Galveston tournament and
we will play Dobie and Pasadena
Memorial, who were both playoff teams
last year,” she said. “We will be tested
before we open district with West Brook
on the 17th (of February).”
Sterling was district co-champs in
2010.
“We have just as good of chance this
year,” said Cosby, who has 17 players on
the team. “I think our talent this year is
every bit as good as it has been in the past,
if not better.”

STAFF REPORTS
In the “Top 10” sports

out on Jan. 1, there were a
couple of omissions.

Sterling Lady Rangers, led
by all-state players
Madison Pepper, Darla
Vasquez, Kaci New and
Eunice Alaniz, winning
their fourth consecutive
TISCA state water polo
championship in 2011.

named to the NISCA All-
Nation team, and Pepper is
now playing water polo at
Brown University.
In 2010, the Sterling
boys’ and girls’ water polo
teams both won state titles.
The second was Jerry
Stewart stepping' down as
Dayton’s head football
coach after leading the
Broncos to 14 playoff
appearances in 15 seasons.

Class 4A school’s athletic

University of Houston
Head Coach Tony Levine
announced another addi-
tion to his coaching staff on
Wednesday as veteran
offensive coach Lee Hays
has. rejoined the UH pro-
gram to serve as the offen-
sive line coach for the
Cougars next season.
It’s Hays’ second stint at
UH. The Del Rio, Texas,

of those stops his programs
annually produced some of
college football’s top
offensive outputs.
“This is an important
hire for our staff and we are
excited to welcome Lee

Levine said. “Lee is with-
