SALES TAX
Rains County sales tax allocations up
--------—^iBy ACbY PODY
Rains Cotiniy Trader stall
For the third straight month, sales
tax allocations to Rains County were
up over the same time period the pre-
vious year. In 2010, Rains County’s
rebate was $3,311.42 more than in
2009 for a 12.65-percent increase.
Sales tax in November was remitted
to the state in December and returned
to the entities in January.
OUT OF WORK?
Because of this time lag; dollar
amounts shown on th#table on page 2
represent sales during November and
include, of course, the famous “Black
Friday” sales. ^
Since the state reports sales tax
rebates totals on a calendar- year basis,
this report is for the month of January
only and the year-to-date totals are the
same as the month’s totals.
The city of Emory received $9,740.78
more in the month of January 2010
than in January 2009.
The 21.04-percent decline in sales
tax dollars returned to Point in Janu-
ary were most likely the result of
the impact of .the economic recessiyn
coupled with the fact that many Point
businesses remit collected sales tax to
the state on a quarterly basis rather than
monthly.
EastTawakoni had $806.87 less-sales
in November 2009 than in 2008 result-
ing in a 14.96- percent decrease.
Hunt County posted a 0.53- percent
gain with Greenville showing a 3.33-
percent gain.
In Wood County, Yantis posted a
whopping 75.60-percent increase prob-
ably due to the recent opening of a
Dollar General store there. Alba also
showed a positive result with a 9.94-
percent increase.

The U.S. Census Bureau is hiring nationwide
The national unemployment rate is
hovering around 10 percent, but the
good news is that the upcoming 2010
Census will create hundreds of thou-
sands, of temporary, part-time jobs
across the United States. The Better
Business Bureau offers the following
advice on what it takes to work for the
Census and tips on how to land a job.
Every ten years, the U.S. govern
ment is required to count every man,
woman, and child in the country. The
2010 Census is a massive undertaking
that requires the work of more than one
million individuals. This means that
hundreds of thousands of temporary,
part-time Census taker jobs will be cre-
ated across the U.S. to assist with the
2010 Census. This should come as great
news to job hunters who are looking for
ways to pull in a paycheck, even if from
part-time and temporary jobs.
“Many families are out of work and
struggling to make ends meet. The jobs
that are being created to assist with
the 2010 Census could not come at a
better time,” said Mechele Agbayani,
President & CEO of BBB Central East
•Texas. "A part-time job with the Census
can help pay bills while still leaving the
job hunter time to look for permanent
employment.”
Job hunters can apply tor jobs with
the Census Bureau now, however, most
hiring will take place during the spring
of 2010. Census takers usually work
in their own communities, going door
to door, conducting brief interviews
with households that did not return
their questionnaire. Census takers work
approximately 20 to 40 hours per week,
primarily, in the evenings and on week-
ends and are paid weekly.
An applicant’s chances of getting a
job with the Census depend on many
factors, such as the availability of work
in his or her community,'* test score
results, number of hours he or she is
available for Census work and veterans’
preference. Also being able to speak
a second language - even a-rare lan-
guage—fluently is a sought-after trait.
Applicants will need to be flexible as
Census work is usually conducted on
weekends and during evening hours,
w hen most people are at home to com-
plete their census questionnaire.
The BBB and the U.S. Census Bureau
recommend that interested individuals
take the following steps to apply for a
job with the 2010 Census:

SUPPORT FOR FIREFIGHTERS - The South Rains Water Supply Corp. board of
directors authorized a voluntary program in May of 2009 to accept contributions to local
