City to help E. Hickory businesses
“People have a perception that it’s difficult and torn
up, so we're trying to get the education out there
that it's not hard to get here, and if you want these
businesses here in six months, you need to
get down there.’’
— Julie Glover, economic development program administrator for Denton
Officials seek ways to

City officials and University of North
Texas students are working to try to find
ways to promote local businesses im-
pacted by street construction.
Construction for the “grand street”
project to improve East Hickory Street
began in December and is running be-
hind schedule. The improvement work
has hurt sales because people think it is
too difficult to get through the construc-
tion to shop or eat, said Julie Glover,
economic development program ad-
ministrator for the city.
“We know there are issues that go
along with [construction],” she said.
“People have a perception that it’s diffi-
cult and tom up, so we’re trying to get
the education out there that it’s not hard
to get here, and if you want these busi-
nesses here in six months, you need to
get down there.”
The project will help businesses
once it’s completed, Glover said. Side-
walks will be wider, bike racks will be
added and there will be other physical
improvements, in addition to new elec-
trical, sewer and water fines.
In conjunction with the Denton
Convention and Visitors Bureau, the
city recently launched a mobile app
called “Dig Little d” to promote busi-
nesses in the area and show where peo-
ple can park. This also connects with
another app, Foursquare, where busi-
nesses can tell users about daily specials
and promote themselves to downtown
visitors, Glover said.
The city is adding signs to say busi-
nesses are open, and city officials are
working with a UNT public relations
class to come up with new promotional

Early voting began and started
strong in Denton County on Monday.
A steady stream of voters heading in
and out of polling locations in Denton
County added up to 5,367ballots cast as
residents made gubernatorial decisions
for the state on down to fracking ban de-
cisions locally in Denton and several rac-
es in between.

“That’s a good thing, that’s what we’re
looking for,” said Lannie Noble, Denton
County elections administrator.
Back in the 2010 midterm election,
4,084 ballots were cast in Denton Coun-
ty on the first day of early voting.
Noble said that there were no issues
on day one from either supporters or op-
ponents of propositions staying at their
appropriate distances at the polls or any
issues with voter identification require-
ments.
Proponents and opponents of the
proposed ban on hydraulic fracturing in
Denton set up outside the Denton Civic
Center on Monday, one of the county’s 21
early voting locations.
Voters could pick up yard signs indi-
cating their support either for or against
the ban.

City Council member John Ryan took
some new numbers on Denton’s proposed

For many months, city staff members
have presented financial projections for
the city’s convention center based on cer-
tain assumptions about business at the ac-

him a copy of that document so that he
could test variables in the assumptions,
such as the hotel occupancy rate and tax

Driver dies in two-vehicle collision in Sanger
By Bj Lewis

One person died at the scene of a Mon-
day afternoon accident on FM455 near
Sanger High School.
According to Sgt. Lonny Haschel of the
Texas Department of Public Safety, Texas
Highway Patrol troopers were called to the
scene of the two-vehicle accident at 3:50
p.m.
The accident occurred when a Hyun-
dai Accent was traveling west on FM455
and crossed into the eastbound lane and
struck a Mitsubishi Endeavor that was
traveling east, he said.
The driver of the Hyundai died at the
scene and two young children were in-
jured, Haschel said.
One of the children was transported by
ambulance to Denton Regional Medical
Center and the other was taken via air am-
bulance to Cook Children’s Medical Cen-
ter in Fort Worth.
The driver of the Mitsubishi was
trapped in the vehicle and was rescued by
the Sanger Fire Department.
That driver was flown to Medical Cen-
ter of Plano via air ambulance with serious
injuries, Haschel said.
Names of those involved in the acci-
dent were not made available as of press
time.
Haschel said troopers were still on the
scene investigating the accident into the
evening Monday.
