Ruling lets gays wed, but bureaucracy cited locally as couples are turned away
By Mark Sherman
Associated Press
WASHINGTON - Same-
sex couples won the right to
marry nationwide Friday as a di-
vided Supreme Court handed a
crowning victory to the gay
rights movement, setting off a
jubilant cascade of long-delayed
weddings in states where they
had been forbidden.
“No longer may this liberty
be denied,” said Justice Anthony
Kennedy.
The vote was narrow — 5-4
— but Kennedy’s majority opin-
ion was clear and firm: “The
court now holds that same-sex
couples may exercise the funda-
mental right to marry.”
The ruling will put an end to
same-sex marriage bans in the
14 states that still maintain them
and provide an exclamation
point for breathtaking changes

AUSTIN — Two men in their 80s
got the first same-sex marriage license
Friday in Dallas, some gay couples else-
where were denied and Gov. Greg Ab-
bott, dismayed by the Supreme Court’s
ruling, ordered state agencies to respect
religious objectors.
The decision Friday that gays and
lesbians have the same right to marry as
any American reverberated quickly in
Texas, which tumbled from the national
forefront of opposition to a pastiche of
euphoric couples rushing to county of-
fices and Republican leaders parsing
their defeat.

Denton County, politically ruby red,
didn’t join 14 Texas counties that issued
same-sex marriage licenses Friday, and
that drew mixed reactions from church
leaders, elected officials and others.
Denton County Judge Mary Horn
said Friday she didn’t expect local offi-
cials to respond to the news the way
others did. With so many Dallas County
elected officials coming from the Dem-
ocratic Party, the “core philosophies” of
the people in charge there are different,
Horn said.

After weather delays, the opening of
the new student union at the University
of North Texas is now expected in Octo-
ber instead of August this year.
The majority of the exterior is done,
now adorned with a soaring eagle above
the University Union entrance, and
now construction crews are working on
finishing interiors, said Zane Reif, the
union director. Offices and services will
move into the building in late October
and early November, he said.
