Residents of Hawkins breath-
ed a lot easier Thursday after
a runaway oil well, which
spouted gas for 45 hours, was
bamed and capped.
The well was capped at about
11 a.m. Wednesday, nearly two
full clays after it erupted a
block away from the down-
town business district
Monday afternoon, while
crewmen were re-working the
15-year-old well, gas blew in
and began steaming about 100
feet into the air. School was
dismissed in Hawkins and a
couple of hours later, at about
5 p.m. friction set off a spark
that ignited the well.
Fire departments from every
neighboring town and city in
East Texas rushed to the scene,
and Mineola's new engine was
one used to help keep t lie
flames under control
Myron Kinley. experienced m!
well firefighter from Houston
was summoned to the scene,
arriving about midnight Mon-
day.
Tuesday morning. Kinley
went to work, pulling the rig
from under the inferno, and
going to work then on calming
the fire.
After the "Christmas tree" of
the rig was dragged away, the
well's casing began feeding
most of the escaping gas. pull-
ing the diameter of the fire
in to about four feet.
Kinley tiien blew out the
fames and a mixture of salt
water was poured in with the
gas to keep it from igniting
anew. A no smoking order was
issued for two blocks, around
the well all this time.
A special rig to cap tlie well
was moved in. but all day Tues-
day. the gas blew the cap oft
again and again.
vVhen the tire was burning
so savaglv Monday night,
townspeople and oil officials
were afraid the other wells in
the area might react to the m-
lemo. Surrounding oil wells
were shut clown and salt water
pumped down the holes.
Another fear that gripped the
town was the water supply It
was desperately low.
Newspaper cameras, TV offi-
cials, radio men were all over
tlie place.
■ ;\ three-minute description
with moving pictures of the
fight was given Tuesday night
on a national CBS television
news show of Douglas Edwards.
The well caught fire about 5
p.m. Monday after having
blown out about 1:30 p.m.
It burned fiercely Monday
nivlit. at times sending a roar-
ing flame 200 feet into the air.
