(Continued on Page Two)TEXAS OUT TO WIN
Stimulated by a steady increasing ap-
pearance in the winning column in var-
ious athletic events, the old athletic leth-
argy of the ship seems to have gone the
way of other out-moded articles, to the
ash-can. Enthusiasm is gradually ap-
pearing, and with it the hopes that next
year the point total of the Texas in the
Iron Man competition will show a sub-
stantial increase.
Dr. Gardner, the Athletic Officer, back-
ed by his corps of assistant for each
sport, is trying to get Texas representa-
tives in every type of Fleet athletic com-
petition. We want to enter everything,
from bob-sledding to bowling, and we ex-
pect to garner some points in each.
WARDROOM DONATES
TROPHYMORE MONEY
On the twenty-eighth of March Con-
C -ress passed the bill which gives us back
part of our pay cut. Five percent of our
pay was returned effective from Febru-
ary First and another five percent to he
effective July first. Longevity benefits
were returned to the Enlisted personnel
effective on the first of July, but re-en-
listment gratuity has not been returned.
JTaturally the first question everyone ask-
ed was, "When will we get our money?"
The Pay Office was in a tight spot for it
was also time for quarterly returns but
there were no N R A hours in the Pay
Office and the back pay was computed
and credited so that everyone received
their back pay on the regular Pay Day
Thursday. We take off our hats to the
force in the Disbursing Office for doing
a tough job, even though short-handed,
in record time.In line with the new policy, officers of
the wardroom mess and the Captain have WHAT TO SEE IN PANAMA
each donated a sum of money for the
purchase of a handsome silver trophy forinterdivision boxing. The trophy carries
two statuettes of boxers, squared off in
the ring, and is suitably engraved in a
I scroll at the top. A plate is provided on
which to engrave the name of the win-
ning divisions,--will yours be the first?
It's something to start working on, now.
At present, a committee is working on
the rules under which this trophy will be
presented, and these will be published
here as soon as approved. However, in
general, it is expected that the trophy
will be presented semi-annually to that
division which has won the most points
in the interdivisional boxing tournaments
which are to be held as parts of a series
of happy hours, commencing during the
coming cruise. It is probable that not
only will the winners be awarded points,
but that something will be scored by the
enthusiasm and backing of the division
concerned.
It is not a bit too early to start think-
(Continued on Page Four)When the pirate Sir Henry Morgan
raided the city of Panama in January
1671, the father of San Jose dismantled
their famous altar of gold and escaped
to sea. The marvelous treasure, made of
plates of virgin gold, ornamented and a
work of art, besides being of fabulous
value for the gold alone, was never seen
again, for after the departure of the
pirates, the holy fathers returned and
built their present Church of San Jose
on Avenida A, a very plain little church
of white plaster in which they installed a
very plain altar of plaster. As the years
passed, the Golden Altar of San Jose
became a legend and another lost treas-
ure. In 1903, after Panama had gained
her independence and the peace of the
country was assured by the United
States, the priests of San Jose com-
menced to chip and clean, and behold.
like a butterfly from its cocoon appeared
the golden altar after 230 years of dis-
guise as a very plain plaster altar.
