Charles L. Creger, 52, a disabled veteran who was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism in military operations against an armed enemy in Korea, died Saturday after a sudden illness. Creger lived in Blanchard and had resided in
the Shreveport area since 1947. He was a master sergeant while fighting in the Korean confict and on Sept. 29, 1951, he led his men in an assault against a heavily fortified enemy hill. The attack was successful, but the casualties were many, including two machine gunners. Creger grabbed one of the guns and fired upon the enemy sol- diers as they reformed. When ordered to advance again, Creger led the way again and threw grenades at the enemy.

During the battle, a grenade hit him. He lost an eye and fingers of his left hand. Creger's funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Wellman's Funeral Home Chapel. Members of the military will serve as pallbearers.
