Three county commissioners
moved in equipment and started
the project last Wednesday and

Roberts, Precinct 1; Fred Wall

Workers were handicapped
because of rain and are sched-
uled to return to do some more
work. County Judge Cecil Egger
stated that equipment will be
brought back to work on some
terracing to help correct the
drainage problem and do some
leveling. This Is expected to De
done as soon as the weather
permits.
The ambitious undertaking of
landscaping and beautifying the
courthouse grounds was adopted
as a ^project by the Goldthwalte
Garden Club and was approved
by the Commissioners' Court of
Mills County. The Club has an
over-all plan outlined and pre-
pared by a landscape architect
and It will be a long range pro-
gram developing the courthouse
square block as a Mini-Park.
A number of members from
the Goldthwalte Garden Club
landscape committee were on
hand as work got underway on
removing the shrubs and trees
and razing the band stand.

ture in working on plans to ex-
ecute the overall project. It will
be done, they said, “slowly and
a little at the time.’’
Mrs. Wilkins announced this
week the plans for this year call
for planting a number of flow-
ering bulbs and spring flowers
In part of the area.
Some of the shrubs that were
removed were part of a project
of the Goldthwalte Garden Club
members when they planted
them In 1M1.
A plaque on the band stand
was dated 1022 Indicating that
the stand was erected in the
early Ws. The plaque will be
mounted and put on display In
the courthouse, according to

Sgt. Goldthwalte, whose home Is In Los Gatos, California, is
stationed at Randolph Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.
He had visited here with his mother several years ago and
made a return trip to show his wife the Texas town that was
named after his family. The City of Goldthwalte was named after
his great-grandfather.
Mr3,. Goldthwalte, a native of Ohio, stated that she is not too
fond of the Texas weather.

waite.
Purpose of the meeting was to

Mills County Livestock Show.

meeting. Thurman Head, chair-

Bulldogs’ extra point failed.

yard field goal bringing the

trailing.
The Golden Eagles were on
their way In the third quarter
after a Bulldog fumble wa** re-
covered by Johnny Miller. Eight

brought the Eagles to a 10-fl

33rd Annual Mills County live-
stock Show.
The show Is scheduled for
Friday and Saturday, January
8 and 9, 1971. The Oeneral Ar-

Tuesday morning by Hollis Wig-
gins, chairman for the Jaycee
Little League Committee, there
will be a work-day at the ball
park this Saturday, September
26.
Beginning Saturday morning
at 9:30 a. m„ weather permit-
ting, all Little League daddies
are urged to be present at the
ball park to help tear down the
old wooden outfield fence and
begin setting up 1200 feet of
new chain link fence.
This fence has been purchas-
ed through the Little League
with Little League funds and
will be erected through donated
labor, Wiggins stated.
Claudia Cockrum Heads Women’s
Campaign For Bentsen In Mills Co.

Williams Ranch Cemetery will
be held this Saturday, Septem-
ber 26.

has named coordinators of
women’s campaign activities in
Mills and Comanche Counties.
Mrs. Claudia Cockrum of
Goldthwalte will head the
women’s division,In Mills Coun-
ty and Mrs. James Wllkerson,
associate editor of the Coman-
che Chief, was named to, direct
the women’s efforts In Coman-
che County.

finances are in a pretty bad
shape. Funds will be needed
shortly to get the ball rolling
