OAMURU, New Zealand,
Feb. 10.—Captain Robert F.
S<ctt, the explorer, and his par-
ty were overwhelmed by a
blizzard on their return jour-
ney from the south pole and all
perished. They reached the
south pole January 18, 1912.
Captain Scott and party
reached the exact spot at the
south pole where Ronald
Amundsen planted ,'he Norweg-
ian flag one month earlier.
This was recorded in documents
found on the bodies of the dead
explorers- The number of the
dead is not exactly known, but
may reach sixty-six.
News of the death of the
explorers was brought to Civili-
zation by the captain of the
Terra Nova, the ship which
- took the Scott expedition to the
south and which had gone
again to bring them back. Mrs.
Scott, unaware of her husband's
fate, left San Francisco Feb. 5
for New Zealand to meet Scott.
She hadn’t heard from him in
eighteen months.

WASHINGTON, Feb. TO.—A spe-
cial cabinet meeting today consider-
ed the Mexican situation. While it
was again stated that there w ill -be
no need of intervention during the
remaining three weeks of the Taft
administration, the general staff of
the army has the Mexican mobiliza-
tion plans ready and the navy is in
readiness.
It develops that the administra-
tion was not completely surprised by
yesterday s uprising, as it had been
expe ted for some time that the
Madero regime would soon end.
The question most to concern the
cabinet meeting today was the pre-
carious situation of Americans in
Mexcio City if Diaz or Madero can’t
guarantee
property.

LEGISLATIVE NEWS NOTES.
AUSBIN. Feb. 10 —With most of
the important bills reported bn by
their respective committees legisla-
tive proceedings from now on will
be chiefly in the main bodies of the
Legislature themselves and many of
the lobbyists or various measures
have gone home.
The session will likely suspend
Wednesday on account of so many
members being Absent on the vigit-
ing committees to the various state
institutions.
The Kennedy liquor bill will be
up for third reading in the House
this week, but there is some proba-
bility that the House will not pass
it, as the Governor is known to fa-
vor the Welnert-^eal bill which on-
ly carries out the strict letter of
the San Antonio platform demand,
while the Kennedy measure, as pre-
viously described in these dispatch-
es. "has teethx tn it.”

SUNDAY.
10.—The re-
volt began Sunday when the muti-
nous soldiers took possession of the
public buildings, shot down Federal
adherents in the streets, release!
Gen Felix Diaz from prison and un-
der hig banner pract’-ally captured
the Melicwn capital. Madero suc-
ceeded in reaching and holding the
National Palace wherein he and his
supporters wer^ besieged.
Sunday was markea by four sepa-
rate engagements and it is believed
that not less than 250 were slain
during the encounters. Among the
killed was Gen. Bernardo Reyes,
who was released' from prison by
the revolutionists. He was shot In
the bead in the first encounter In
front of the National Palace.
Last night President Madero, his
Ministers and a strong detachment
of loyal troops was fortified in the
Palace while Gen. Diaz with a big
majority of the regular troops be-
hind him wag practically in control
of tha capital.
At that time, however, Madero
seemed to be genuinely optimistic
and to all parts of the Republic tel
egraphed reassuring news, declaring
that the army was loyal and that
tfanquillty had been restored.
