Starting with the arrest of Floyd
McCurley, charged with attempting
to stab a young white man. the
Sheriff’s office foice jailed four ne-
groes tn thirty minutes Saturday
night, the search for McCurfey in
the negro section resulting in the
arrest of two negroes on drunk and
disturbance charges and a fourth
w ho aad been wanted several
months on a gaming charger
lyeonard Stewart, aged about 23.
a white man living east of the city,
suffered a narrow escape from a
knife in a negro’s hand. He was
talking with a negro man about cot-
ton picking when a negro walked up
to him saying. “Which will you give,
your money or your life.’’ Stewart
replied that he didn't want to give
either, and turned to run from the
drunken negro who wag advancing
on him with a knife. The ne«ro
slashed at him general times. His
clothing was cut in several place?
one thrust cutting his overcoat, his
dress coat, two pairs of trousers and
going through his underclothing
just scratched the skin. Stewart re-
ported the affair to the officers
who later arrested McCurley on
Congress avenue. He was identified
by Stewart as his assailant
jailed. Archie Wiggins, Bob
and Frank Mattox were the
negroes caught in the drag.
Sunday was the thirteenth “bad”
Sunday in succession, weatherwise
persons said Monday, meaning that
for thirteen successive Sundays it
had been either cloudy, rainy or
cloudy and cold. Rain fell Sunday
morning, followed by a generally
cloudy day with the sun peeping
through only once or twice <
the day.
