Galveston as a Health Resort at the
Head of the List.
Following are facts and figures which
show that Galveston is one of the health-
iest cities in the United States, in fact, it
is almost at the head of the list. The fig-
ures are authentic and reliable, being
taken from the official abstract of sani-
tary reports of the marine hospital bureau
at Washington. Appended is a copy of
the mortality table of different cities, in-
cluding Galveston:
The Friesland’s Stormy Voyage.
Special to Evening Tribune.
New York, Jan. 23.—The steamer
Friesland, at this port from Antwerp,
during most of the voyage had heavy
west-south west and west-northwest gales.
On Jan. 17 in latitude 49°, longitude
36° , she bird a hurricane from south-
west to north-northwest, with high
waves. She was hove-to fourteen hours,
with her’engines stopped. She used oil
with fine effect, keeping the seas from
breaking on hoard. On Jan. 20, in lati-
tude 46°, longitude 45° .0k’, she passed
an iceberg about 209 feet high.

Mrs. Cuney Receives a Telegram from
Her Husband Making' the Announce-
ment.
I have been confirmed. Am well.
N. W. Cuney.
The above is a copy of a telegram said
to have been received last night by
Mrs. Cuney from her husband, who is at
Washington.
A reprorter called at the
house and asked if the news was
true. >Mr. Cuney’s brother stated that
he had not seen the telegram, but had
heard so from Mr. McCoy, a custom
. house employe, who was present when
Mis. Cuney received the telegram. She
showed it to him and he read the words
above quoted. “It’s so sure that you
may bank on it,” said the brother.
A call was made at the collector’s
house, but no one was at home.
The clerk’s in the custom bouse were
rejoiced to hear the news, and there was
an 1 told you-so-I-was-sure-of-it-look in
their eyes when they spoke about the
matter.
McDavid’s Sentence Affirmed.
Special to Evening Tribune.
LittleRock, Jan. 23.—The supreme
court yesterday affirmed the decision of
the Monroe county circuit court in the
case of David McDavid, who was con-
victed of murder and^sentenced to be
hung November 22, 1889, bis time having
been extended to allow an appeal to the
supreme court. Tlte murder occurred in
Phillips comity, the particulars of which
are rather sensational.
It appears from the evidence in the
case that in June, 1888, McDavid and
Gilbert Easley had some misunderstand-
ing, the deceased charging the defendant
with the theft of a heifer. Early in De-
cember they met in the woods, and Mc-
David claims Easley assaulted him with
a gun ; that in the encounter which fol-
lowed he killed him.
He concealed the body and returned,
where lie was arrested several days af-
terward on suspicion. After he was con-
fined he sent for Sheriff Pillow, of Phil-
lips comity, and confessed the crime. He
was taken out and conducted the officer
to where the body was concealed.
Orders in Regard to Liquor, Occupa-
tion and Vehicle Licenses.
City Collector Maclnerney to-day
placed in the hands of Chief of Police
Lordan a long list of delinquents who
have not paid their occupation tax, beer
and liquor licenses.
“I have detailed three officers,” said
the chief, “lo notify these people that
they must pay. If they don’t they will
be prosecuted, and that will entail addi-
tional expense. I have also, issued orders
to my men that they m list see to it that
the city beer and liquor licenses are posted
in a conspicuous place as required by
law. All who do not comply with the
law will be arrested. The officers must
also see that the old numbers on drays,
carts, floats, buggies, etc., are taken off’,
so that the new number alone is dis-
played.”
There seemed to be some misunder-
standing as to the farmers who claimed
to be exempt from the vehicle tax be-
cause they only come a go and do not
remain long in the citv.
“So does a milk w’agon,” said Collect-
or McInerney, “ami milkmen must pay.
All persons who drive vehicles over the
pavement are subject to the tax. The
money goes to a fund for repairing the
streets, and it is only just that all who
use them should contribute toward keep-
ing them in good order.”

Paris, Tex., Jan. 28.—Engineer Billy
Moher, of the Texas and Pacific, was
running his train onto a switch when
some loose box cars were started on the
main line. The fireman saw them com-
ing, and jumping from the cab, climbed
up on the boxes and tried to brake
them, at the same time calling to
Moher to lookout. Moher did
not hear him and his engine had not
cleared the switch when the. box-cars
struck it demolishing the cab. Moher
jumped through the side window', falling
on his head, shoulder and hip and is
seriously hurt, though the extent of his
injuries cannot yet be known.

A Strange Case of a Young Woman Near
Kansas City.
Special to Evening Tribune.
Kansas City, Mo., Jan. 28.—There is
a sleeping girl at the home of a farmer
named Carpenter, six miles south of
West Point, that has puzzled the attend-
ing physicians for the past nine days.
No case is recorded in the history of the
oldest practitioners in Kansas City that
is exactly like it. Her slumber is not
like one m a peaceful trance, but is agi-
tated, hke that of a person in the throes
of the nightmare. For the past nine days
she has been plunged into this strange
somnolent condition, during which she
sometimes beats herself on the head and
breast and utters incoherent and unintel-
ligible exclamations. Chicken or beef
broth is poured down her throat when'
she opens her mouth and by this means
she is kept alive. The girl’s name is
Anna Parker, and she has been working
as a domestic in the family of Mr. Car-
penter for a year or more. She has had
brief fits of drowziness before, but none
or them has lasted as long as this one.
The attending physicians are completely
nonplussed over the case, and it is ex-
gected the unnatural sleep will be fol-
io wed by death.

A Policeman’s Lot Not a Happy One
f After All.’
! A reporter sat in the police station to-
day, when a colored w’oman came in and
demanded “de law’ on dat yer woman dat
lives up de alley where I does.”
“What woman and what alley?” in-
quired an officer.
She could neither name the alley nor
the woman or assign any cause why she
wanted to have her arrested, but she was
bound “to have de law on her,” and
left, threatening vengeance on her im-
aginary foe and that stupid officer “who
couldn’t understand anything.”
“That’s a sample of what we have to
contend with,” said the guardian of the
peace. “But that isn’t anything in com-
parison to some. We have all kinds of
people come here asking us the most im-
possiblethings. People even try to make
us a collection bureau for bad debts.
Yesterday a man came and wanted his
washerwoman arrested because she
wouldn’t give him his clothes.
“ ‘Do you owe her anything?’ I
asked.
“‘ Only a few7 dollars,’ he replied. And
then he wanted the woman arrested.
“y/h, the police department is a great
school for experience.”

Vicksburg, Jan. 28.—Major Randall
G. Higgins, a well known planter of
Issaquena county, but a native of Lex-
ington, Ky., committed suicide at his
Eustatia plantation by shooting himself
in the head. The suicide is supposed to
have been caused by mental depression,
the result of several years’ ill-health. At
the hour mentioned he went upstairs to
his room, which he darkened, and taking
his shotgun, cocked it, put the muzzle to
his head, and by means of his cane
pulled the trigger. The entire side of bis
head was blown off, and he must have
died instantly, as when the family found
him immediately after the discharge life
was extinct.
