If an apparent "spook" wearing ’
the regulation gown and cowl catches
you in any deviltry tonight and puts
you under arrest, don't be surprised,
or. rather don't get into the deviltry.
The apparent spook will be nothing
more nor less than a special police-
man put on for the partcular purpose
of putting a stop to the outlawry
that so many Halloween evenings in
the past have witnessed.
Tomorrow and not tonight is real-
ly Halloween, but the celebrators
have been preparing for tonight on
account of tomorrow being Sunday.
In the past there have been instances
of lawlessness and destruction of
property, more or less valuable, by
men and boys dressed in sheets.
Fences have been torn down, side-
walks have been torn up. gates have
been carried off and anything that
wag left loose on the streets was at
Organization of the United Chari- ,
ties association of Denton was ef-
fected Friday afternoon at the M. E
church South with a fair representa-
tion from nearly every church in the'
city. The meeting was called for that I
purpose and the purpose of the so-1
ciety is to make the giving of chari-1
ty in Denton systematic and to ob- I
viate the necessity, heretofore exist-
ent, of giving by the merchants and
business men promiscuously. in
some cases contributors, it is said
have been imposed upon by unde-
serving people This the society will
endeavor to prevent and those who
receive charity will be in the first
place needy and in the second place
deserving.
The meeting was called to order
by Mrs Tom Lovell, who briefly ex-
plained why the meeting had been
called. Prayer by Rev. Barcus fol-
lowed an<j then came a discussion
joined in by most of those present
as to the best way of organizing and
of affording the relief needed.
It was determined to elect some
of the officers then, but the election
of the vice presidents was deferred.
Each church in the city co-operating
with the society is privileged to
name its own vice president for the
association and this will be attended
to at a later date. The officers chos-
en were:
President—Miss Lenora Hann of
the First Christian church.
Secretary—Mrs A. A. Abney of the
American Presbyterian church.
Treasurer—S. O Beall of the First
Presbyterian church.
A committee on constitution and
by-laws was appointed as follows:
Mrs. A, A. Abney, Mrs. A. P Duggan.
Mrs. W. F Jarrell, Mrs. A. Logan,
and Mrs. Allen. This committee is
to report at the next meeting, which
is to be held at the M E church
South next Friday afternoon, anl at
which it is the desire of the organi-
zation that every church in the city
should be represented.
