O and more!
After months of preparation, Sanger high School
junior, Ashley Robinson competed in 3 of the area’s largest
dance competitions this past spring. Dancing a hip hop solo to
“We run the Night”, also choreographed by Ashley with the
help of her instructor Whitney Coleman, she earned a divi-
sion I placement at Danceline’s drill team competition held at
Denton High School this past January. Following her success
there, her next competition was the Thunderstruck regional’s
held at Will Rogers Coliseum in Fort Worth where she was
awarded a high gold ranking. Her final competition of the
season was the Showstoppers championship, also held at Will
Rogers, which not only earned her a gold ranking but also
2nd place in the top ten overall out of the 26 competitors in
her division. While placing at or near the top at all of these
competitions is quite an accomplishment in itself, earning a
place in the top ten is the ultimate award. Although scoring is
slightly different at each competition, it is all based upon the
same components: costume, execution and technique of your
movements and overall stage presence.
In addition to her personal achievements, she also
danced a jazz routine to “Knock on Wood”, choreographed by
her instructor Whitney Coleman with her 3D dance company
ensemble; helping them to earn best small ensemble and two
gold awards.

Annual local Widows of
America Event this Saturday
The only man ever invited to a Widows of America,
Inc., event is Walter Douglas, 93, who flew B-29 bombers
in WWII.
Douglas will join other musicians with his electric guitar
to honor a West explosion survivor, a Denton WOA mem-
ber, at the “Widows Love God and Country” Jamboree and
Salad Luncheon from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday (June 8)
at the Baptist Student Ministries Building, 1111 Oakland at
Sawyer Street near TWU Campus. Area widows are invited
to attend.
“The annual, widows-only event brings out the best of us
through talents, humor, music, a silent auction, good food
and many door prizes to inspire and prove that widows are
large minority group but not individuals to be stereotyped.
“Our objectives highlighted by awards and recognitions
at our annual convention-like jamborees are merely results
of finding our created purpose, place and role in month-
ly chapter meetings to be used within our family, church,
workplace and community.” said E. Curina Morris, WOA
Founder and Director.
“Widows lose a spouse, not themselves, their personali-
ties, abilities, education, goals or objectives and need to con-
tinue in their rightful places with confidence and the trust of
others,” she said.
Tickets for the all-day program with luncheon is only
$6.00 per person, but a reservation is needed by noon, Fri-
day (June 7th) for the state-wide advertised event.
Members, widowed guests and visitors will perform in
a variety of ways throughout the program with memorable
1950’s-60’s hits, then patriotic and inspirational instrumen-
tals and vocalists. Special types of widows will be recog-
nized i.e. tallest, most-recent widowed, youngest and many
more categories for door prizes.
The annual, Eagle Award for a widow who has per-
severed with the characteristics of an eagle and achieved
success through adversity will be presented to a deserving
member.
