The candidates for county and
district offices came in response
to the Commercial Club’s invita-
tion Wednesday; they came in
the rain, and fearing that it was
going to continue to rain some of
them returned home before the
night speaking. Hov’ever, four-;
teen remained and presented
their claims to the people in ten
minutes’ speeches. There were
some good speakers among them,
a few real orators, and the crowd
seemed to enjoy their statements.
One noticeable f^bt was develop-
ed, that nearly all of them in the
dim, distant past had been close-
ly identified with the history of
this city and section of the coun-
ty and to which they owed their
success in life. One had received
a prize for having brought the
biggest load of cotton to White-
wright, others taught school
here, others were reared here,
and so on. They were all at
home in Whitewright. It is a
noteworthy circumstance that
there is no bitterness or mud-
slinging in the present campaign.

Adding to the list of attract-
ions for “Prosperity Week” a
plantation minstrel company ar-
rived yesterday afternoon and
lined up on amusement row for
the rest of the week. The wild
west show—and it is declared to
be a good one—is expected in to-
day in time for the night per-
formance. Beginning, then,
with the big $5,000 carrousel we
have the “Spider Girl” show,
“Bobby, the Crawfish Boy,”
“Cigarette Fiend,” “Forty-nine
Camp,” Minstrel show, wild
west show, doll throwing and
other wonders and amusements.
Governor Campbell
Will Speak Tonight
Ex-Governor Thos. M. Camp-
bell of Palestine, candidate for
the United States Senate, ar-
rived in Whitewright this morn-
ing and will address the peo-
ple of this city and section from
the speakers’ platform in the
styeet tonight. If it should rain,
the distinguished visitor may be
heard at the city hall. Interest
in the senatorial contest centers
around the leading candidates
and it is not improper here to
admit that Mr. Campbell is one
of the leading aspirants to this
high position. For the first
time United States senators will
be selected by direct vote of the
people, and to vote intelligently
one should know the platform of
each candidate. Hear Mr. Camp-
bell tonight.
A large crowd thronged the
city’s business section last night
in the full enjoyment of the friv-
olities of “Prosperity Week.”
They crowded around the big
steam swing and the children
rode to their hearts content.
The procession of humanity
moved down amusement row,
contributed their nickels and
wondered at the wonders.
Around the speakers platform a
more serious audience assembl-
ed to hear the political issues of
the impending election discuss-
ed. The attendance was larger
last night than for any previous
night, but rain again sent them
home earlier than they would
have gone had the rain man with-
held his forces for another hour.
With fair weather, tonight is go-
ing to be the best night of all.
The band will play, ex-Governor
Campbell will speak and there
will be new and additional at-
tractions.
