There are ways to keep this
volcano from erupting all over the
family. Try setting aside a buffer
time for establishing calm. This
time may be needed to compress
and re-establish bearings. Arrange
a standing agreement with the
family that everything that is not
critical will wait until the time to
unwind is over. Do something
relaxing during this time and attain

more common in the allergic person.
Most ant stings cause very little
pain or itching. Stings of the
imported fire ant, however, can
produce severe local or systemic
allergic reactions. In the local
reaction, pain and a small raised
area at the site of the sting are
followed in a few hours by several
fluid-filled blisters that eventually
. break or dry up. After the first day,
the sting site itself becomes red and
filled with pus. Days later, this spot
crusts over and scar tissue forms. A
systemic allergic reaction involves
progressively larger local reactions
and future stings may even cause
symptoms of anaphylactic shock.
Most people who have a local
reaction to a single sting do not feel
the need to consult a physician.
Howeyer, when stings lead to more
severe reactions, expert help should
be sought.

Insect allergy simply means that
exposure to an insect brings about
an overraction of the immune
system in a sensitive person. Most
often, exposure involves a sting or
bite. In most cases, insect allergy
might be called more correctly
insect sting allergy or insect venom
allergy, since the allergic reaction is
usually not caused by the whole
insect but by the venom that it
injects.
The salivary secretions of biting
insects (such as mosquitoes, flies,
lice, and fleas) or the irritating
substances left on the skin by some
crawling insects may lead to
sensitivity, but it is the stinging
insects that are generally the most
dangerous.
The Tymenoptera or “membrane-
winged” insects are the only insects
that sting, and only a few of the
stinging Hymenopters-honey bees,
wasps, hornets, yellow jackets, and
ants--cause serious allergic
reactions in man. Of these five,
reactions to the yellow jacket and
the bee are the most common.
Insect stings can cause a variety
of reactions, depending on the type
of insect, the amount of venom
injected, the presence or absence of
a specific type of ’ allergy in the
person attacked, and the site of the
sting. In general, reactions fall into
three main groups. Normal
reactions to swelling, itching, and
warmth at the site of the sting.
Toxic reactions are the result of
multiple stings. Five hundred stings

An Insect Allergy?
enough to kill because of the effects
of extremely large amounts of
venom injected into one person.
Fewer stings, but usually at least 10,
closely spaced over time, can cause
serious illness and discomfort.
Allergic reactions, the third type,
produce some of the same
symptoms as those of toxic
reactions, but allergic reactions
differ in that they can be triggered
by only one sting or a minute amount
of venom. Any reaction to a single
sting involving extensive swelling of
a large area beyond the site of the
sting probably should be considered
allergic until proved otherwise.
The onset of allergic reactions can
be immediate or delayed. A delayed
reaction, occuring several hours to 2
weeks after a sting, is similar to a
drug reaction known as serum
sickness. In this situation painful
.oints, fever, hives or other skin
•ashes, and swollen lymph glands
may develop. Both immediate and
delayed reactions can occur in the
same person following a sting,
although immediate reactions are

each year have systemic allergic
reactions to insect stings. The new
methods of diagnosis and treatment
with venoms have been proved to be
highly effective, but the costs in
dollars and time to treat such large
numbers of patients could be
staggering. The burden is especially
great when booster shots have to be
given for an indefinite length of
time.
As a result, research workers are
looking for improved ways to
determine which patients should be
advised to have therapy. The
National Institute of Allergy and

“To a great extent, the industry
