Plans for improvements include
replacement of 40-year-old heaters
in the high school and installation of
new air conditioning at both high
school and elementary to replace the
water coolers now in use.

Final plans are being made for the
De Leon Chamber of Commerce and
Agriculture’s annual meeting and
banquet, which will be held on
Monday, January 29, at 7 p.m. at
PAR Country Club.
Scheduled to be presented are
awards for Man of the Year, Woman
of the Year, and Golden Deeds
Award. Deadline for nominations
for any of these honors is
Wednesday, January 17, at the
Chamber office.
Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7
p.m. at both the De Leon City Hall

VFD was called to assist
Desdemona, Gorman, and Ranger
with a grass fire two miles north of
Desdemona past Howard Cemetery '
Four local firemen were gone from
4:28 a.m. to 7:14 a.m.
That afternoon firemen were at
the scene of a grass fire two miles
north of De Leon. Six firemen
responded and were gone from 4:30
to 5:00 p.m.
Three fire calls were answered on
Saturday.
The first was a grass fire two
miles from Proctor on FM 1478.
Time called was 10:06 a.m. and
return was 10:39 a.m. for four
firemen.
Saturday afternoon from 3:40 to
4:20 eight local firefighters were
assisted by Dublin with a grass fire
three miles north of De Leon.
From 4:28 to 4:55 p.m. eight
firemen were at the scene of a grass
fire one and one-half miles north of
DeLeon.

The Comanche County Junior
Livestock Show’s 55th edition was
held Monday and Tuesday at the
Livestock Center in Comanche for
the county’s 4-H and FFA exhibitors.
Two hundred and seventy-seven Champion
youth were expected to show 461
animals.
Asbestos will be removed from
under the carpet at the high school.
Replacement of windows, doors,
and carpet at the elementary and
high school is planned, as well as
remodeling the restrooms at high
school. .
New construction includes a
building on the high school campus
to house two new complete science
laboratories and classrooms.
The present cafeteria building has
some structural defects and the
kitchen equipment is outdated.

The weatherman promises us
some moisture this week, so let’s
hope he’s right. It is really dry! In
September, there was right at two
inches of rain the entire month and
the last 3te months the total has been
less than two inches. That’s dry!!!
Our firemen have been meeting
themselves coming and going at the
fire station-there have been so
many fires.

received a check in the amount of
$5,023.36, up .34 percent from the
$5,006.34 of a year ago.
Receiving $9,678.74 was the City of
Comanche, representing a 12.57
percent decline from 1989’s
$11,070.22.
The County of Comanche received
a net payment of $9,865.93, down 6.58
percent from $9,989.96 in January
1989.

The Comptroller’s office has
indicated figures for January sales
tax checks which have been sent to
cities and counties throughout the
state. This month’s checks reflect
taxes collected on November sales
and reported in December by
businesses filing monthly tax
returns.
Merchants collect the state, city,
and county sales taxes and send
them to the Comptroller’s office with
their tax returns. The state keeps its
six percent share and each month

School Bond Election
Set For Saturday
a new cafeteria, a library and three
additional classrooms, and to
replace the kitchen equipment.
Planned for the elementary school
gymnasium are lighting, heating,
and a new playing surface.
Passage of the bond election will
require a $.1413 per $100 valuation
increase in taxes, which would begin
on October 1,1990. Property valued
at $50,000 would see a tax increase of
$70.65 per year.
Those who may vote in Saturday’s

18 years old, and a resident of the Champion Duroc to Grand Champion honors in the Market Swine show at the

Concert Will
Be Thursday
The De Leon bands’ winter
concert is scheduled for Thursday,
January 18, at 7:30 p.m. in the
gymatorium.
Playing will be the sixth graders,
a combined seventh and eighth
grade band, and the high school’s
Mighty Maroon Band.
There is no admission charge, but
there will be a collection taken for
the scholarship fund.

The dry weather conditions and
low humidity are ideal conditions for
a fire alert to be issued for the state.
The De Leon Volunteer Fire
Department urges that no trash be
burned unless absolutely necessary.
Firemen have been busy the past
week.
On January 7, there was a grass
fire at Rucker caused from burning
Christal Koonce placed third and trash. The local firefighters assisted
fifth in the Breeding Sheep show and Gorman from 3:58 to 5:08 p.m.
Shane Fuller had a 6th place in Nine De Leon firemen and nine
MedMtan Wool Lamb. Christal also Gorman men were at the scene.

of De Leon Jr. 4-H exhibited the
Grand Champion Market Swine with
the Champion Duroc.
Corey Hammon of De Leon FFA
showed the Grand
Breeding Swine with his Champion
