Last week a $528 million school
finance reform bill was signed into
law by Governor Bill Clements,
after a sixth special session of the
Texas Legislature.
Funding for the program comes
from a quarter-cent increase in the
state sales tax and higher taxes on
tobacco and mixed drinks, as well as
budget cuts and fund transfers. The
legislation effective date is
September 1.
De Leon Superintendent Dwain
Bills indicates that under Senate Bill
1, the local school district would gain
about 3120,000, but in order for the
school to get these funds, there
would have to be an increase in
taxes. The present tax rate is 71
cents per 3100 valuation, and an
increase of 20 cents to 91 cents could
bring approximately 8141,000 to the
local system.
