State Sen. Larry Taylor and
State Rep. Ed Thompson will
have competition in the 2020
elections.
Just days before the
deadline to file, two
Democrats have filed to
challenge Taylor in the race
for Senate District 11.
Former Galveston County
District Judge Susan Criss
will attempt her second run
for state office after falling
just short in the race for House
District 23 in 2014. Criss was
judge in the 212th District
before stepping down to run
for the House. She continues
to work as an attorney in
Galveston.
Margarita Ruiz Johnson has
filed to face Criss in the
Democrat primary in March.

Pirates have made a
comeback right here in Alvin,
but these aren’t the kind of
pirates that raid ships and
replace their lost limbs with
pegs and hooks. These are
porch pirates — people who
walk right up to a person’s
front door to steal a freshly
delivered package.
The nationwide porch
pirate epidemic becomes
more prevalent every holiday
season and Alvin is no
metaphorical Poland in this
plague. The Alvin Police
Department issued a
statement on its Facebook
page for residents to be
careful when expecting
packages after the first two
porch piracy incidents of the
holiday season were reported
in the Forest Heights
subdivision off Highway 6.
The first victim was
Raymond Wheeler on Barras
Street. A gentleman
concealing his face stole
some Christmas gifts from
the front door just after 6 a.m.
Just 10 minutes later, Kevin
Casey was targeted at his
home on Allison Street. Both
Wheeler and Casey have
Ring doorbells that captured
footage of the thief who
concealed his face during the
crime.
The Texas Legislature
passed a bill during the last
session that made porch
piracy a state jail felony if
packages are stolen from
more than 10 homes at a time
and a third-degree felony if
packages are stolen from
more than 30 homes at a
time. A third-degree felony
carries a penalty of two to 10
years in prison.
According to the Alvin
Police Department, following
these steps could help limit
stolen packages.
