their January session here.
O. O. Terrell, president of
the Gas Utility Service Com-
pany. left with the city offi-
cials a list of towns served by
two natural gas companies and I
declared that prices are gene- I

Though Mr. Terrell has earl-
ier asked for a franchise in
Alvin, councilmen said he made
no such comment at the Jan-
uary session but merely asked
tha’ the officials study the
materials he left with them.
A city ordinance was amend-

after a representative of Dow

county at Dow plants.

School Census
Is Currently
Being Taken
The annual scholastic census -1
is underway in Alvin Indepen- I
dent School District. i
The period for enumerating
eligible scholastics runs from
Jan. 1 through Jan. 31,'3059.'
Since the per capita payment
for eligible scholastics on the
census roll is the only manner
in which the Alvin Schools
receive state funds, it is vital-
ly important that each eligible
scholastic appear on the school
district’s census for the next
school term, said Ed Brown.
School business manager.
The census is being com-
pleted through the school for
all students who are enrolled;

With Police
Sylvan Garrett, a 25-year-old

The necessity for an addi-

THE OLD AND THE NEW—As 1959 began R. E. Rip-
ley, veteran fire chief, had already announced his in-
tention of retiring after more than 10 years of lead-
ing" the department of volunteer fire-fighters, here,
Wesley Eernisse, who was more-or-less reared in the
department where his ^ather served as chief for more
than 20 years before his death, was named to take
his place. Here Eernisse, right, congratulates the re-
