Mr. David C. Leavell, president, presided.
The minutes of the last meeting, August 13, were approved as mailed.
'. 'Leavell told the group that the Executive Vice President and several others c"
so Lipton Tea Company were in Galveston last week discussing a formal opening of
lh plant, and that iie and Mr. Holliday suggested making he annual meeting a Ltp-:
1'o-a Gomany salute, having the President of the company as the principal speaker,
Slesident Leavell said, though, that these plans would get no publici y, as thele
may be an unavoidable delay in the company's opening date, somet ime in early
January, and the Chamber could not put off the annual meeting.
TMv W. A. Eicher was then asked to give a resume of the Agriculture and Dairying
Committee's work during the past 25 years, dux ing which time he has bern Chairman.
He said he wished particularly to thank :r. Harry Eagleston and 1r. Holliday for
their assistance, saying that the vast amount of work could not have been accora-
plished without being a part of the Chamber of Corarlerce.
Mr. Eicher said that the county has over 1,123 farms, valued at about $7,496,000
for land and buildings, between ! and 5 thousand dairy cattle, producing approxi-
mately 2,106,000 gallons of milk, representing "i,0'0,uJ0. Thea the committee
started, farmers 'ere milking 75 to 80 cows to produce as much milk as they pro-
duce today from about 50 cows.
Ho further said that one example of the work which the committee did was tuc insti-
tut ion of a program :hc-eby the farmer snowing tao best record of improveo ent during
the year was presented with a rogi stored dairy animal. TmQ offspring of those
animals ;orm given as prizes too. Registered bulls ;eg: obtained from Texas A & E
College for use by the dairyon. The committee gave a registered heifer to a
youngster each yeal, and appointed a sponsor to give him any assistance which ha
needed and to make sure the animal was properly cared for.
In the days of the "milk war", 1;r. Eicher continued, the committee worked toward
the stabilization of the milk ijrices. As a result of hi3 efforts the market was
stabilized, and the Chamber made many friends instead of losing noers, as was
predicted.
