Honorable Truett Latimer
House of R presentatives
North Austin Station
Austin, Texas
Dear Mr. Latimer:
We are informed that House Bill No. 156, introduced by Representative
Spears of San Antonio, has for its purpose the removing of the rate mak-
ing powers from the Texas Railroad Commission as to railroad rates and
the granting to the railroads of the right to make their own rates. We
wish to register our opposition to this bill.
The trucking industry in Texas is engaged in hauling much of the same
character of materials as the railroads, and the Railroad Commission
of Texas has certainly been instrumental in preventing chaos and dis-
crimination in the field of rate making. If the railroads are given the
power to make their own rates, then it would seem to follow that the
trucking industry should be given the same power, and the result of this
would be evident. We believe that the granting to the railroads of the
right to make their own rates as designed in the Spears bill would be a
disastrous blow to the transportation industry in Texas.
We might add that our firm is not in direct competition with the rail-
roads to the extent that many of the other trucking concerns of Texas;
however, we realize, and wish to impress upon you, the disastrous effect
to the industry generally if Representative Spears' bill is allowed to
pass.
We, therefore, urge upon you, in the interest of the preservation of not
only the railroads but the trucking industry in Texas as well, that you
oppose the passage of House Bill No. 156.
Yours very truly,
HELDT BROS. TRUCKS
