"Spellbinder" is the
word that best describes
the Akiba Institute's
fifth Shalom Israel! guest
speaker. Coming to Beth
Yeshurun directly from the
Sinai battlefront, inter-
nationally famous author,
war correspondent, radio
commentator and lecturer,
Robert St. John will dra-
matically recreate the
tragedy and the courage

Israeli War Death Strikes Close To Home
The incalculable cost of survival, paid with precious young Israeli lives, saddened
all Beth Yeshurun pilgrims last week when news of the death of their friend and guide,
Amnon Binyaminovitz, reached Houston. Mrs. Rafael Arbisser said Amnon was wounded and
died October 15 on the way to a hospital. Amnon led five Houston pilgrimages. Pub-
lished here are only a handful of the sentiments expressed by former pilgrims upon
receipt of the tragic news:

VOLUME I, No. 33
Popular Author Robert St. John to speak at Beth Yeshurun >ov. 28
found in the Yom Kippur War on Wednesday,
November 28, at 8 p.m.
Since 1948 and the partition of
Palestine by the U. N., Robert St. John has
made annual trips to the Middle East and
has served as a correspondent in each of the
Arab-Israeli conflicts. His great interest
in Israel, as expressed by his frequent
visits to the Middle East and the seven books
he has written on the area, qualifies him to
lecture knowledgeably on
the Eyes of a Non-Jew."
Joe Rice
"He showed us so much of the land and made the trip so much more meaningful than any-
one else could..." Alan Peaceman
"A war seems like a bunch of statistics if you're not participating, but then when
someone you know gets wounded and killed, it hits close to home...I feel very fortunate
to have known him." n. n , ,,

G9, our son David was a Beth Yeshurun pilgrim in
He loved the country he learned to know and under-
stand, and the guide who was able to make its history con- >
temporary and compelling. Every parent...knew the name
AMNON. In '71...another pilgrim, Sammy...with the same
respect for AMNON...Then summer '72, the family pilgrim
was Mindy...her guide, the incomparable AMNON.
In 1973, we, the parents of these three pilgrims had
a walking tour of Jerusalem that was incredibly illumi-
nating... the guide...AMNON. We understood why this
strong, gentle scholar with his encyclopaedic knowledge
of Israel and Israelis could affect so many of our Hous-
ton children so deeply. This summer we will have
another young pilgrim from our family, Suzy. Her guide
will not be AMNON. She can only visit his grave...and
we will cry...and ask of God, WHY?
