Have You an
Dear Mr. Smith.
I have been impressed toihiy, in
passing through Northeast Texas and
Southwest \rkansas, with the value
of tho greater number of beautiful
green fields of rye with hogs and
other stock feeding in thorn I am '
sure that we have seen more than a ‘
hundred such fields, ranging in size
from 10 to 10 acres, and each one of
them full of good looking stock, large-
ly brood sows, and 1 cannot help
thinking of our conditions in .Mata-
gorda County all thi* winter, and the
value that would have resulted from
a field of rye or winter oats, for pas-
ture, on every farm in the county.
Had all of our farmers and ranchmen
put In a field of rye or winter oats
last fall the chances lire that time
sands of dollars would have boon sav-
ed to tIve county, which ha* boon paid
out. for food shipped in, besides thou-
•ands of head of stock that have
starved ami died would have been
saved, and in addition we would
doubtless have many times the num-
ber and value of hogs in the county
that we now have. With our climate
and advantages for didne this, com-
pared with this country, it* difficult
to understand why we are not doing
it. Yours sincerely,
I Burton D Hurd.
