HDU Down For
Equipment Tie-Ins
Hydrodesulfurization Unit No.
2 came down last Monday for
turnaround and tie-in of new
equipment which will further
improve yield and quality of gas
oil processed by the unit.
Being tied in to the unit are
two flash drums, two exchangers,
two pumps, and a compressor,
along with piping and instru-
ments necessary for the modifi-
cation. This equipment will pro-
vide for more flexible operating
conditions at HDU No. 2.
Last year, additional reactors
were added to provide further
improvement in product quality
and to make for more flexible
operation of the unit. This also
afforded an increase in produc-
tion of motor gasoline and light
hydrocarbons.

Foundation work was nearing
completion for a Toluene Deal-
kylation unit (TDU) to be lo-
cated immediately east of the
newly constructed Toluene Ex-
traction unit.
The TDU will be part of the
Benzene-Toluene expansion pro-
gram which was announced last
January. Under this program,
facilities will be installed which
will nearly double Baytown Re-
finery production of these two
products. The new TDU will use
a process developed by em-
ployees in Research & Develop-
ment. It will convert toluene to
benzene through a process which
splits methane gas off of toluene.

Repairs are being made to the
Refinery sewer system and to
separators in the Dock area which
were damaged by a series of
explosions on June 15.
The initial explosion, which
occurred under the parking lot
on the west side of the Cracking
and Light Ends building, broke
up concrete in an area about 24
feel wide and 45 feet long. This
part of the large box sewer is
about nine feet under ground.
Repairs to the sewer started this
week and will last about three
more weeks. During this lime,
every effort should be made to
use alternate sewer routes.
Separators 13, 14, and 15, lo-
cated near the Dock gale, were
also damaged. Work on Separa-
tors 13 and 14 is about 75 per
cent complete with Separator 15
to be finished in September.
While the separators are out
of service, revisions are being
made to improve the operation
of each, such as a new baffle
A change is being made in
the distribution of directories.
Field clerks and others in charge
of offices with telephones must
order the new directories on
regular stationery requisition
forms sent to the stationery sup-
ply room in the Main Office.
Reason for ordering the direc-
tories in this manner is to make
sure that each office gets the
number of directories it needs
and that none are wasted. Orders
should be submitted now.
Get Safety Equipment
From This New Location
Safety hats, fresh air masks,
goggles, and other personal pro-
tective equipment are now dis-
bursed from new quarters in the
northwest corner of the Store-
house.
Safety shoes are now sold from
this location between the hours
of 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. (exclud-
ing the lunch period) Monday
through Friday.
Entrance to these new quar-
ters is from the platform on the
north side of the Storehouse.
Carl Gassiott will fit employees
with new shoes or adjust any
safety equipment that has been
issued.
Relocation of the principal
stock of safety equipment from
the tol room in the Central
Shop and the safety shoes from
the bin section of the Storehouse
to this more accessible point,
plus increasing the period during
which sales are made, was
planned as a convenience to em-
ployees.
gram includes addition of equip-
ment at the present Benzene unit
site and at Hydrodesulfurization
Unit No. 2. Off-site work will
include tankage and line changes.
The TDU will occupy an area
about 80 feet wide and 170 feet
long on which will be located
two reactors, a quench drum, a
furnace, an absorber tower, a
stabilizer tower, and associated
pumps and exchangers.
The unit will be completed
in December.
Capacity for benzene produc-
tion will be increased from 30
million gallons to 55 million
gallons a year, and toluene ca-
pacity will be increased from 32
million to 55 million gallons a
year.

New telephone directory in-
serts for the Refinery will be
issued starting July 31.
When the inserts are received,
they should be put in the regu-
lar red telephone directory
binder.
It is important that individ-
uals listed in the directory notify
the Refinery operator (Dial 0)
of changes or corrections in their
telephone numbers and locations,
it is planned to issue new direc-
tories every six months—about
February and September.
In order to help keep direc-
tories up-to-date, a list of changes
and new telephone numbers will
be printed in Briefs periodically.
The changes should then be
noted in the directory.
