Barricades are expected
to remain in place at least
through the middle of next
week on FM 1735 as road
crews make asphalt repairs.
This phase of repair work
on the roadway, installed by
James Construction Group
in December as part of the
Titus County loop and pass-
through projects, began
with lane closures Monday,
according to Mark Heidaker,
PTP development manager.
Work on the roadway has
continued through this week
to repair alligator cracking
that occurred a couple
months after the December
install of the roadway,
Heidaker said.
This week, flaggers have
been directing traffic during
the daytime lane closures. At
nights and on the weekends,
Heidaker said, the lanes have
and will remain open for
through traffic.
“After the laying of the
asphalt in December and
after the roadway was
opened,” Heidaker said,
“we noticed that different
segments of the roadway
April sales tax numbers
were up over 6 percent in
Mount Pleasant and a little
over 1 percent across the
state, according to a press
release issued by Texas
Comptroller Glenn Hegar
this week.
City Manager Mike
Ahrens noted that a record-
setting amount of sales tax
receipts indicates a growing
local economy.
“Our sales tax receipts
continue to reinforce the
trend we have been seeing
over the past several
months,” Ahrens said.
“And that is that the retail
economy in Mount Pleasant
continues to thrive.”
Hegar agreed, stating in
his release that the state’s
sales tax revenue in April
was up 1.1 percentage points
compared to April 2014.
However, Hegar added April
marks the second month of
significantly slower growth.
“April is the second
consecutive month of
relatively slow growth in
sales tax revenue, and I
remain cautiously optimistic
about our economic
progress,” Hegar said.
“Growth in total sales tax
revenues collected this
month was muted by the
significant slowdown in the
oil and gas mining sector;
however, collections from
other major economic
sectors - including retail and
wholesale trade, restaurants,
construction, and
manufacturing - continued
to grow.”
Hegar noted that April
was the 61st consecutive
month of continuous
Three area churches

help a Daingerfield family
rebuild after a house fire in
late March destroyed their
home.
Bishop James Mason and
minister Mary Mason have
been active in local churches
and their community since
the 1960s, Minister Joe
Lewis, Jr., of Full Gospel
Pentecostal Church in
Mount Pleasant, said.
Lewis, who organized the
benefit to raise funds and
help the Masons rebuild and
recover, said he felt like the
church should be the first
to reach out and help the
family.
“I’ve known the Masons
all my life,” Lewis said.
“They are very humble, very
good and honest people.
They hold to what they
believe.”
The Masons, who have
raised four daughters,
one son and seven
grandchildren, live in
Daingerfield, but are active
in the Mount Pleasant and
Sulphur Springs churches
and traffic patterns are
correct to accommodate this
weekend’s traffic, he said.
“If weather holds out,
R.K. Hall will be there
Monday or Tuesday to put
the asphalt back in those
patched areas,” Heidaker
said.
“We plan to be done next
week, weather permitting,”
he said, “but the weather
doesn’t look good.”

method; and it was agreed
that the contractor would
mill out the asphalt and
add 4 percent cement to the
base; and that would make
it more of the rigid type
surface - make it stronger.”
Crews have milled out
segments on both east and
west sides of the roadway,
Heidaker said.
