Mrs. Sallie Fairchild died at
her home near Union Grove
Wednesday night, in the
third of the games played be-
tween Gilmer and Sand Hill to
determine'1 the basketball cham-
pionship of Upshur County, the
Buckeyes managed to come
from behind in ithe last quarter
to win over Sand Hill by a
score of 16-13.
Both teams had won .one
game and in this contest, to
break the tie, the fans saw the
fastest basketball game played
on the local court this season.
Gilmer succeeded in atarting
the scoring when Buddy Alles
made two points on free pitches
but at the end of the quarter
the score stood 3 and 3. The
half saw Sand Hill leading by
one point with a score of G to
5, and by the end of the third
quarter this loud had been in-
creased to 11 and 9, in favor of
Sand Hill.
Buddy Ai les broke the tie
when he took advantage of a
fast break, leaving the Sand
Hill guards far behind, and tos-
sing the ball through the
basket with ease. A double foul

of Tannehill will be in the
party. Among them is a
quartette, Which will furnish
music as part of the ritual.
After the degree work, re-
freshments will lie served and
a special hour enjoyed. Visiting
masons arc cordially invited,
and members of Bethesda are
urged to attend.
Mr. C. "C. Reynolds of Ster-
ling City came in Wednesday
evening, bringing with him a
fine Herford bull for his farm
in this county.

R. M. Chambers
Died At James
. Wednesday Night
At the midnight hour, Wed-
nesday night, Mr. R. M.
Chambers, of James, passed
away, principally with the in-
firmaties of old age and oth-
er complications, at the ad-
vanced age of 88 years.
He is survived by three sons
and one daughter, viz; J. C.
Chambers, R. C.. Chambers,
and T. C. Chambers and Mrs.
Caffey.
His funeral took place Thurs-
day afternoon at Cypress ceme-
tery in Franklin County, where
he was a former resident, hav-
ing been a resident of Upshur
county for the last 11 years.
Mr. Jimmie Fleetwood an-
nounces an unusual dance next
Monday night, Feb. 27, at the
Hays Hotel. Ladies will be
charged 40c, and gentlemen
40c. Music by the Louisiana

Former Commissioner T.
Ben Thompson, who had been
arrested and lodged in jail on a
charge of contempt of court,
was released Friday. A writ of
habeas corpus had been obtain-
ed from Judge Walter B. Rus-
sell, by Thompson’s attorney,
Milton Greer Mell.
The ex-commissioner was
then released on $200.00 bond,
pending hearing before Judge
Russell on the first day of the
next regular term of court,
April 17. •
