Mr. and Mrs. Bockmon mov-
ed to Navasota in the summer
of 1956 when he had two
years of work ahead of him
at Texas AAM working toward
a civil engineering degree.
Immediately following
graduation from AAM, Mr.
Bockmon went to work for the
State Highway Department
and was assigned to work here
under Joe Piccolo, resident en-
gineer. Last summer, Mr.
Bockmon became a licensed,
registered professional engine-
er and along with this came
the title of resident engineer
under Mr. Piccolo.

Navasota City Commission-
ers Monday night passed a
telephone rate increase re-
quest on its first reading, au-
thorized City Manager Jack
Garrison to appoint an equal-
ization board, awarded a con-
tract to the Texaco Company
for supplying the city’s oil
and gasoline for the ensuing
year and agreed to allow the
Chamber of Commerce to print
more courtesy parking tickets
for use on out-of-county cars.
George Franks, president
and general manager of the
Navasota Telephone Company,
explained that the rate in-
crease is tied-in with improv-
ed serve for Navasota and ex-
tended area service.
Fred Abeel's motion, that
the rate Increase be passed
on its first reading, was sec-
onded by Jeff Haynie, Jr. and
it passed unanimously.' The
increase request will be up for
its second and final reading-
at the next regular City Com-
mission meeting, Mond a y,
May IL
Mr. Franks said that his
company recognized its re-
sponsibility to provide ade-
quate telephone service, but
that this responsibility could
not be met under existing
rates.
He said the proposed rate
increase would bring the
company’s rate of return up
from 2.55 per cent to 3.38 per
cent. - " .
He said this would enable
the company to upgrade serv-
ice to 171 Navasota customers
who now have party line serv-
ice.
He further pointed out that
the company proposes to pro-
vide extended area service be-
tween Navasota, Anderson,
Richards, Shiro and Washing-
ton exchanges. This means
that there will be no long
distance or toll charges be-
tween these towns.
Mr. Franks went on to say
that the new rate would en-
able the company to construct
new lines in the rural area
of Navasota, Anderson, Rich-
ards, Shiro and Washington
to relieve overcrowded condi-
tions on present lines and to
provide new service to 81 new
subscribers who now want
service.
