The Circle K club of South
Plains College held its weekly
meeting at 12:30, Thursday,
Oct. 1, in Texan Hall. The meet-
ing was called to order by
Vice-President Eddie Puckett in
the absence of President Gary
Don Haught.
Mr. Lucke, sponsor of Circle
K, discussed a club sweetheart,
and the members decided to
elect one at the next meeting.
Mr. Bobby Simpson of the
downtown Kiwians was the club
guest. Gary and Eddie were
invited to attend the next meet-
ing of the downtown club Wed-
nesday, Oct. 7.
Mr. Eddie Smith and Mr.
Mike Reed were appointed to
the Program Committee for the
month of October.
campus organization, Texans
for Christ, this year. He was
elected president at the club’s
first meeting held Sept. 21 in
the Speech Auditorium.
Troy Abell, a freshman from
Levelland, was elected vice-
president, and Jimmy Johnston,
a sophomore from O’Brien, was
elected secretary-treasurer.
It was decided that meetings
should be held twice monthly,
the first and third Monday of
each month, at 7:00 p.m. The
group also decided that each
althletic coach should be a spon-
sor. The sponsors for this year
are coaches John Yates. Bill
Powell, A. C. Halsell, and Tra-
vis Livingston.
Any male athlete is eligible
to join Texans for Christ and
anyone who did not attend the
last meeting is urged to attend
the next meeting which will be
Oct. 19.
Phi Beta Lambda
Club in Meeting
Fifteen students attended the
meeting on Sept. 28 of Phi Beta
Lambda with Terry Darling,
newly elected vice-president, in
charge of the discussion. Presi-
dent Billie Roming was absent
because of illness.
Other officers elected were
Beverly Crawford, freshman
from Muleshoe, secretary-treas-
urer, and Pat Kaltwasser, soph-
more from Farwell, reporter.
Ideas for decorating a float
for the coming parade in Lev-
elland were discussed by mem-
i bers.

The Plainsmen Press would
like to welcome Mr. A. C. Hal-
sell to the teaching and coach-
ing staff of South Plains Col-
lege.
Along with teaching physical
education and directing intram-
murals, he will take over duties
as track coach. Mr. Halsell
plans to make South Plains a
real contender in track this
year.
A former top athlete him-
self, Halsell graduated from
Baylor University in 1958 and
obtained a masters degree in
January, 1980.
He comes from McCollum
High School in San Antonio. He
has also coached at Waco.
Halsell got most of his track
experience in the air force and
in several AAU meets. He was
a top competitor in the World-
wide Air Force Championships.
The mentor finished fourth in
the 880 yard run, fourth in the
440 yard hurdles, and fifth in
the 440 yard dash.
Archery Tourney Officers Elected Circle K Club
Set Oct. 12-13
All South Plains College stu-
dents are invited to enter in
the school’s archery tournament
to be held Oct. 12 and 13 from
3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., sponsor-
ed by the Women’s Recretional
Association. There will also be
a practice clinic held on Octo-
ber 8 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
for those interested.
WRA met Oct. 1, at 12:30 p.
m. in Texan Hall with its Pres-
ident, Pat Kaltwasser, presiding
and approximately fourteen
members attending.
A social committee consist-
ing of Nell Thrasher, Beverly
Crawford, and Melva Dennis
was appointed. There will be
a called meeting Monday at
1:00 p.m. in the gym to discuss
the Texas Fedral Convention of
the WRA. All members are urg-
ed to attend.

Two new members of Phi The-
ta Kappa have been accepted
for the fall semestr. They are
D’Ann Reed and Carlyon Sing-
letery. These students have
both made a 3.25 or better
grade point average and were
selected by the sponsor, Mrs.
Grant, and by Dean Nathan
Tubb.
Phi Theta Kappa is an honor-
ary society on the junior college
level. The society admits mem-
bers at the beginning of each
semester. To be eligible a stu-
dent must have a 3.25 grade
point average and maintain a
3.0 to remain in the organiza-
tion.
The SPC chapter has twelve
members. Officers for the 1964-
1965 school year are as follows:
President, Marcheta Ownbey;
vice-presidnet; Rita Colley; and
secretary; Linda Brown.
The first meeting of the club
was Wednesday, Sept. 29. The
business concerned the national
convention to be held in
Chicago.
