Dear Mr. Ellis:
Mr. Kempner permitted me to see your letter of February 15th, discussing
your plans for the Cotton Records Depository. The list of possible donors
is most impressive and, in my enthusiasm for this project, two possible
sources occured to me. They each would be a fascinating collection in it-
self and in combination with those you have mentioned would probably form
a depository of enormous importance.
The New Orleans Cotton Exchange ceased trading in futures last year. I am
not familiar enought with the operations to know whether they have ceased
functioning as an exchange but they may be willing to give their records to
you.
The other possible donor is somewhat more remote both in terms of distance
and of likelihood. Probably the oldest Cotton Exchange in the world is the
Liverpool Cotton Exchange. It is not inactive yet but would probably be the
next Exchange to cease active trading if present conditions continue. Even
if this organization is unwilling to dispose of their records, the present
membership of the Liverpool Cotton Association are firms of great antiquity
some of whom may be interested in disposing of their older records. Of
course the expense of shipping these records from England would not be
small but I offer the suggestion in the belief that the records, if available,
would be worth the expense.
Very truly yours,
Edward R. Thompson, Jr.ERT, Jr/be
