COPY FROM THE OFFICE OF
WILLIAM M. NATHAN
PRESIDENT
DISTRICT GRAND LODGE NO, 7, B'NAI B'RITH
SHELL BUILDING
HOUSTON, TEXAS
March 5, 1945
Mr. and Mrs. Jay &ilverberg
Clarksville, Texas
Dear Clara and Jay:
I have been wanting to write you letter some weeks but the
press of bueiness-.partiCularly 'rith neas-has denied
ow that pleasure. The specify easo hat I writing is to ask
you to make a contribution he Bs Brith Hillel Building Fund
for the University of Texas am your boy has told you what
we are doing, but if he basn story is briefly this
we have taken an opti tra f land in Austin just a block
from the University ea oni reet. This land will cost us
15,000.00. We ha engaged arc iteet to make preliminary plans
for us for a build which I contain lounge rooms, clas rooms,
and meeting rooms, main cm downstairs will be convertible from
religious to social purpose nd will seat upwards of 600 people.
ie envisto ant o ost upwards of $L5,00.0 to
$90,000.0 We have fund already some a3,000.00 and are going
to take ,000.00 it to buy the land. The balance will be cone
verted i o Gover t Bonds, pending the cessation of hostilities,
at which me we w start our building.
I as sure need to stress the need or the value of this
building, as o of you know what we have and what we need. The
Director anticipates a Jewish student body of 700 when the war is
over, and on an 80 to 90 per cent affiliation basis, you can see that
we are planning accordingly. The Committee is headed by r. I. H.
Kempner of Galveston and numbers such men as Sol Brachman of Fort
orth, Fred Florence of Dallas, S. H. Fagadau of Wichita Falls, Jake
arotkin of San Antonio, Abe Rosenthal of Waco, Dr. Etinger, Rabbi
"riedman, and Bill Koen of Austin, as well as the writer. Rose
eld 'from Houston completes the personnel. In my opinioR, there is
no sounder group of Jewish business men and brilliant organizers with
a firm attachment to the cultural advancement of our people than is
represented by the men who are here named. All of us are giving of
ourselves and our time, as well as our momns, nt -e feel that theSfiani 'rrtiifrb wt r*& su . rmmikmnd r EIWtif Je ix< lM lr, M l Mi'areia
