Description

Color halftone postcard on textured linen paper of the Music Hall, Bishop College, Marshall, Texas. The view shows the facade of the two-story hipped-roof building with square two-story columns on the porch that extends across the entire facade and part of one side. An exterior staircase appears to have been added on the porch from the ground to the second floor, probably as a fire escape. The building is surrounded by trees, and in the foreground is a circular sunken space with stairs leading down, perhaps a sunken garden. It is surrounded by a low wall with a railing and small bushes. Printed in black ink below the image: "Music Hall - Bishop College - Marshall, Texas." Printed in the lower right corner below the image: "5B-H932." There is no postmark on the back of the card. The photo caption on the back of the card identifies the building as the C. H. Maxson Music Hall. Printed between the message and address sections: "Genuine CURTEICH Chicago 'C. T. art Colortone' Post Card (Reg. U.S. Pat. Off.)" Stamped in blue in the message space is:"Sample Photo Curt Teich & Co, Chicago, ILL." Bishop College was established in 1881 as a Baptist college for African Americans in Texas. The school moved to Dallas in 1961. The campus was sold the same year. Its buildings were demolished.
