Canton is asked to give only $600 to the Red Cross. Truly the
organization that justly bears It’s name, “The Angel of Mercy,' and
yet it's people are failing to respond as they should. We see the
evidence of our true characteristics— "We forget soon."
As in war all were involved, but a great catastrophe can hap-
pen to a small group in a small area but in both the Red Cross
reaches out a helping hand to all suffering humanity in time of
need.
With us, yes, the war is over, but let us not forget. With
loved ones away with many homes in trying situations, with
dangerous illness or death and when communication became neces-
sary—who did we see? Our Red Cross representative. If you had
a soldier and he needed help—who did he see?—The nearest Red
Cross representative. It is true the Red Cross worker did not
sleep in the fox hole with Johnny nor did they carry his gun, but in
the back ground where sickness, suffering from wounds and death
prevailed we heard of the work of the Red Cross. They were there to
comfort, to keep contact between soldier and family, to cheer and
encourage him to recovery’. To provide food and clothing to the
destitute.
Fortunately, Canton has never suffered a great catastrophe, but
how often do we read of tornadoes, floods, fires and other disasters.
Do you remember what the article said. "The Red Cross field workers
were on hand" or do we forget so quickly since it did not happen to us.
The Red Cross needs just $400 from the people of Canton How
soon we may need more at the hands of the Red Cross the aid of the
angel of mercy to bring to us food, clothing and medicine to homeless
suffering people.
For the future of humanity "Give to the Red Cross" for the bene-
fit of the past. Give to the Red Cross and let’s not forget so soon.
