Extra swine flu vaccines
ordered for Texas
Texas Gov. Rick Perry request-
ed 37,430 courses of antiviral
medication from the Strategic
National Stockpile to prevent the
spread of swine flu.
A recent outbreak which ap-
pears to have started in Mexico
City has officials taking precau-
tionary measures.
Three cases have been con-
firmed in Dallas County; three
in Guadalupe County near San
Antonio.
The earliest known onset date
was April 10. The latest known
onset date was April 24.
The symptoms of swine flu in
people are similar to the symp-
toms of regular influenza and
include fever, lethargy, lack of
appetite and coughing.
Somepeoplewith swine flu also
have reported runny nose, sore
throat, nausea, vomiting and diar-

The annual National Day of

Cody Glenn frequently
saw a group of friends and
family from Rusk cheering him
on. Known as "Cody's Crew," the
group traveled to several of his
games, including Lincoln, Neb.
and just about any time Nebraska
played a Texas team.
After last weekend, it's safe to say
that "Cody's Grew" is gassing up their
vehicles for a few trips to the nation's
Capital.
Mr. Glenn, who started his
collegiate career as a running
back but switched to outside
hnebacker for his senior season,
was taken in the fifth round
of the 2009 NFL Draft by the
Washington Redskins at pick
#158 overall. He was one of
eight collegiate players with
East Texas ties to be drafted
into the NFL, along with
Brandon Pettigrew and Johnny
Knox (Tyler), Louis Vasquez
(Corsieana), Robert Henson
(Longview), Stephen Hodge
(Tatum), Manuel Johnson (Gilmer) and
Dominique Edison (San Augustine).
Mr. Glenn, who played running back
and hnebacker at Rusk, is slated to be-
come a contributor on special teams for

Early voting continues through May 5
Early voting will continue through
Tuesday, May 5. in Cherokee County
as citizens cast their ballots in local
city and school elections.
Elections of interest include a wet-
dry election in Rusk and a half-cent
sales tax election for Alto.
Voters in Rusk will decide whether
to legalize the sale of beer and wine
for off-premise consumption and
the sale of mixed drinks in local
restaurants.
On Monday, the first day of early
voting, 57 persons cast their ballots
in the Rusk election. Three persons
are vying for election as mayor.

ferson Wayne Jackson. Councilmem-

Only four persons cast ballots in
the Alto city election. The half-cent

sales tax is the only item on the bal-
lot as elections for positions on the
council have been cancelled because
of no opposition.
Rusk
Twenty- seven persons cast ballots
in the Rusk ISD election. School
trustees seeking re-election are Britt
Patterson and Rodney Hugghins.
The lone challenger for the two at-
large positions is Tracey Session.
Alto
Six persons voted Monday in the
Alto school board election.

tax collection
tabled for now

Staff Writer
Cherokee County Commissioners took no
action concerning a proposed move of county
tax collections to the appraisal district on
Monday.
County Judge Chris Davis made a motion
that the county move its tax collections to the
Cherokee County Appraisal District (GCAD)
office. The motion died for a lack of a second.
Two and a half employees would have been
eliminated from the tax office staff. Linda
Little, tax assessor-collector, anticipated a
savings of approximately !> !•'?.()()().
Judge Davis said the $43,000 savings would
be for this year and next year and — "it prob-
ably will be more."
Commissioner Katherine Pinotti, precinct
3, said, "I am in favor of saving the county
money, but I wish we didn't have to make a
decision now. I am not sure that this is really
going to help. We control our budget. We have
not heard from the CCAD board. I would like
to know what their plans are and the cost of
taking the collections back.''
"I see this as a matter of saving money,'' Judge
Davis said "This is the most cost efficient.; It

CITY OF RUSK
New apartment
contract ratified

Two Rusk city meetings with the same topic
finished within one hour on April 23 with a
contract accepted and a few fears eased.
The Rusk Economic Development
Gorporation(REDCO) met last Thursday to
discuss the contract between REDCO and
Rusk Housing LLC, owners of the proposed
project to construct Cherokee Hills Apart-
ments at the intersection of Cherokee, Jared
and McVicker streets in Rusk.
REDCO executive director Bob Goldsberry
said ratification of the contract should close
once Rusk Housing LLC receives home funds
from the state legislature, expected either
April 27 or April 80. Should they fad to do
so, they will have until Aug. 1 to secure the
funds. If Rusk Housing LLC does not come
up with the funds by that date, the land will
transfer back to the city of Rusk.
The agreement also states thatRuskHous-
ing LLC will have to start building the com-
