An accident at an Alvin lift station
project claimed the life of 84-year-
old W. H. Mercer last week, after
spending two days in Hermann
Hospital with a critical neck injury.
City Hall authorities said.
Mercer, who was supervising the
construction job, reportedly fell head
first into the 12-foot deep structure,
landing on a ledge which kept him
out of the water below.
The man waited abut 30 minutes in
the well at the comer of Hill and
Blackstone streets before a rescue
crew could remove him and
LifeFlight could shuttle him to
Hermann Hospital.
“It was a completed area,” said
Secretary to the City Manager Linda
Hollabaugh. “They had the lid off to
apparently check on something.
Workers said they didn’t see him fall
in. They saw him one minute, and the

An emotional outpouring of sup-
port for the Manvel Public Library
dominated the regular Jan. 1 l
Manvel City Council meeting.
More than 50 concerned resi-
dents crowded the tiny city hall to
voice their disdain about the
library's closure and offer their
support in the city's effort to con-
tinue library service.
Residents came from Rosharon.
Pearland and Iowa Colony to let
council members know that the
library's services reach out beyond
the city limits.
“You can't change
things after the
fact,” Weimmer said
to the council in her
remarks.
