The news could not have
been better Wednesday
when word was received
that TAKS scores had
improved dramatically at
Sealy High School this year.
Sealy High School
Principal, and incoming
Superintendent, Pamela
Morris was beaming as she
explained the scores to the
SISD Board - and why not?
Sealy High School has been
in a bad place for a while
and amid scrutiny, contro-
versy and adversity, the stu-
dents, teachers and admin-
istrators have pulled
through and given us all a
reason to be proud.
When we receive word
from the state that our rat-
ing is once again officially
acceptable, it is up to us all
to not forget what it was
like to be under this cloud.
It is up to us all to make
sure we hold on to that suc-
cess with everything we
have.
Being an unacceptable
campus is much like filing
for bankruptcy. Once you
reach that point, you can do
nothing but work to dig
yourself out of that hole,
and everything else
becomes secondary. Now, we
can begin to focus on all the
things we want our school
to be.
Before the TAKS scores
were shared with the board
Wednesday, Morris read off
the names of more than two
dozen students being hon-
ored for their UIL academic
success. We want to talk
more about these accom-
plishments than talk about
meeting the minimum stan-
dards. We want our stu-
dents to have every oppor-
tunity. Hopefully, with the
scope and sequence, we will
see results that eliminate
the need for so much inten-
sive TAKS training,
because in the long run we
all know we do not want one
test to be the focus of how
we educate our children.
This test should one day be
an interruption in a much
larger scheme of educating
them. It should become lit-
tle more than a necessary
evil that we fit into our
lives.
Everyone seems hungry
to continue to climb, looking
at becoming recognized and
exemplary.
Our thanks and congratu-
lations go out to everyone at
every level who helped
make this good news a real-
ity.
