A field notebook containing handwritten notes by botanist Sherwin Carlquist during a field expedition to California between 1951 - 1961. The brown cloth-covered notebook has sewn binding along the left edge. There is a typed label on the front cover with the title "Field Book I" and name "Sherwin J. Carlquist". The edges of the cover are worn and there are dirt stains throughout. The contents of the notebook record Carlquist's field observations and voucher specimen collecting events. They include the unique collector numbers used to identify the specimens; collecting dates and locations; navigational directions to specific areas; geographic features and elevations; and stratigraphic details. Carlquist's botanical descriptions detail the plant's natural habitat, taxonomic identification, seasonal observations, weather conditions, plant morphology, abundance and distribution, and associated plant species, insects and other pollinators. His notes also document occasions when he photographed plants or collected liquid-preserve samples. The field notes also include Carlquist’s hand-drawings of plant parts and maps. The notebook covers Carlquist collector numbers 1-646.
