CLOSING EXERCISES
Mn P. A. Skeen's Pupile Give Their
Closing Exercises to a
Crowded Parlor.
The musical pupils who have been
under the skillful teaching of Mrs.
P. A. Skeen gave a closing inusi-
cale last night in the parldrs of Dr.
P. A. Skeen’s residence. The pat
rons of the school and other frieuds
were invited to enjoy the treat in
store from a musical as well as
social standpoint and parlors
were filled with those rfho were
fortunate in being invited!
The pupils did not disappoint
those present but manipulated the
keys at the board in an artistic
manner which showed that Mrs.
Skeen had labored hard to bring
them to that point that would ena-
ble them to make harmonious
sounds in proper measure and
time.
All enjoyed the evening im-
mensely.
Among those who were given
musical parts last night were
Misses Valerie Reeves Correll Rag-
land Eula Thomas Susie Kutil and
Louise Holman.
During the evening the audi-
ence were treated to instrumental
pieces by Mrs. Gus Munzesheimer
Miss Cozette Kellar Bessie Now-
land Mr. Frank Quinn. The
evening will Jotfg be remembered as
one of pleasure.
GOV DAN JONES ANNOUNCES.
Governor Dan Jones true to in-
stinct and having before him pre-
cedents of other Governors ’.who
have stepped out of gubernatoral
shoes to slip on the senatorial foot
gear of others has announced his
intention of asking the people to
give him senator Berry’s place. As
the race is far off and will be decid-
edly a primary election we giye his
candidacy no serious thought at this
date but promise to enter into the
disscussion of the eternal fitness of
himself as against Senator Berry
at the proper time.
In discussion his canadacy with
an Arkansas Gazette Correspond-
ent for the purpose of launching
his boom the Governor says;
“Ordinarily I am averse to afflict-
ing the people with one’s political
aspirations so far in advance of
the time for them to act upon the
matter but inasmuch as Senator
Berry has announced his determi-
nation to ask for another term in
the senate and is already actively
engaged in electioneering for it I
have concluded to satisfy the anxi-
ety of my friends and declare my-
self a candidate for the United
States senate. In proper time I
shall make known my views upon
public matters. My duties as gove-
nor have so absorbed my attention
that I have had no time to devote
to other matters. I shall not neg-
lect those duties hereafter but will
somehow manage to attend to the
exigencies of the campaign for sen
ator as best 1 can. 1 shall insist
upon the people deciding be ween
Senator Berry and myself and oth-
er candidates for the place if there
should be any others at their pri
mary elections. Ido not want any
office unless called to it by a major-
ity of my party in the state and the
only practical way of ascertaining
the will of the majority is by its ex-
pressions at the ballot box.
"I have not abated one particle
of my convictions upon the ques-
tins of the free and unlimited
coinage of silver but 1 do not be
lieve we can ever succeed in that
great measure until we have de-
stroyed those combinations of mon-
ey and greed which uphold thy
gold standard commonly known as
the trusts. That in my judgment
will be the dominant and overshad-
owing issue in the next campaign
1 sHall while governor do all in my
power to accomplish thelt destruc-
tion and should I lie sent to the
senate will continue the warfare
there until no shadow of them shall
remain.”
