Tollett works the boards
Eagles senior post Danny Tollett works to sink a close shot in the
game at Hamilton last Friday evening. Shown in the background
is Tyler Bartley. The Eagles got off to a slow start in the game and
could never recover, losing the District 10-AA game to the Bulldogs
66-40. Eagles Scott Patrick was the leading scorer for the Eagles
with 16 points. The Eagles play San Saba here Tuesday night and
finish the regular season at Comanche on Tuesday, Feb. 12th.
UIL realignment
places Goldthwaite in
District 9-AA
It has happened again, but then who thought it wouldn’t.
Goldthwaite High School, the proverbial “bouncing ball” has
been moved into District 9-AA for the next two years, it was
announced Monday by the University Interscholastic League.
Others in the district are Bangs, Coleman, San Saba, Jim Ned
and Winters.
Goldthwaite had been in District 10-AA with Hico, Hamilton,
DeLeon, San Saba and Comanche. Comanche moved up to AAA,
along with other notables such as Celina and Pilot Point.
District 9-AA is still in Region II. District 10 includes Clifton,
Crawford, DeLeon, Dublin (moving down from AAA), Hamilton
and Hico.
Other notables dropping down from AAA to AA are Eastland
and McGregor.
Enrollment figures place Texas AA schools from 180-344.
Goldthwaite is near at the bottom of the list of 222 schools in
AA with a high school enrollment of only 183.
Mills County schools Mullin and Star will continue in District
13-A along with Blanket, Gustine, Sidney and Zephyr. The same
district will include Priddy for basketball, but will drop Sidney.
The number will change to District 21-A for basketball.
Ranking by enrollment will be released later following any
appeals.

City Council handles routine

Dr. John and Anne Dossey live in Eureka, Illinois, where John has
recently retired from a position in mathematics at Illinois State
University. Their son, Doug, now working for venture capital firm in
• New York, was a teammate of Steve at U of I. He was a high jumper.
John is, a well-known author of math textbooks and one of his books,
a calculus textbook for grades 7-12, has a problem which includes, of
all places, Goldthwaite, Texas. He says that he often uses places he
has heard of or been, and also people he has met, in the problems of
the books.
On page 231 of Mathematics Methods and Modeling for Today’s
Mathematics Classroom, John uses an area of Central Texas to
illustrate a problem about laying out a cable network installation. The
solution would involve a path to connect all the towns using the edges
of the network. Of course, the minimal mileage would result in the
cheapest cost to the cable company.
The bold line on the map indicates the paths to solve the problem,
which comes under the term Hamiltonian cycles, named for Irish
mathematician Sir Rowan Hamilton. He invented this type of puzzle
in 1859.
Thanks to John and Brooks-Cole Publishing of California for giving
us permission to use the illustration. ,

Another John Dossey story comes by way of West Point military
academy. He was invited to participate in a special elite math program
and was just one of a handful of faculty members who were not in
the military. His small class included none other than former
Goldthwaite High School student Kerry Fletcher. Kerry was
astounded to know that John knew where Goldthwaite was and even
more astounded to know that he knew Steve, Frank and Georgie
Bridges. John said Kerry did well in the class.
Steve and Doug were always coming up with goofy problems to
throw at the math professor. One had to do with getting wet in the
rain. The question was: “In order to stay the driest, is it better to run
or walk in the rain?” The realm of possibilities were explored for
about a day and a half with barbs being unleashed just about the time
when everyone thought the idea had been put to rest. The guys
certainly did not get the best of Dr. John. His answer was to walk.
The answer also was prophetic in regards to me, because he knows
someone as old as I am does not need to run in the rain, or anywhere
else for that matter.
We had a great time in New Orleans with the Dosseys, which
included this time, Doug’s girl friend Kathrin, who speaks five
languages and hails from northern Italy.
We took our “grandboys” to the circus in Fort Worth this past
Saturday. The guys, Blake (8) and Cody (5) were in fine form during
the day, and eventually “passed out” on the drive back to Stephenville.
* Isn’t that the way it is supposed to be? Wear the kids out, buy them
• everything they want, feed them cotton candy for lunch and then
drop them off at their parents’.
Georgie and I enjoyed watching the boys faces when something
exciting happened. They really lit up when the acrobats did a stunt.
Always reminds me of the little man who was cleaning up after
* the elephants. A reporter happened by and asked the man how long
he had been doing this job. He leaned on his broom and said “about
35 years.” The reporter asked him why he would do a job like that
for so long. The little man replied emphatically, “What, and give up
show business!”
a foul. Jennifer calmly made the two free throws, and was also
perfect 8-8 on the evening. Clutch free throw shooting enabled
the Lady Eagles to keep the pressure up in the final moments
and emerge with a victory. The Lady Eagles finished the regular
season here Tuesday with a big win over their rival San Saba’s
Lady Armadillos.

out strong the second half as well,
outscoring DeLeon 18-8 in the
third quarter. Senior post
Katherine Hale led the charge in
the third quarter with 10 points.
