Took Oath for Navy in Post Office in Houston, Texas
arrived in San Diego, Calif. for Boot Training.
Left Camp Kidd, San Diego for Radio school at University
of Colorado, Boulder, Colo.
Arrived at radio school Universtiy of Colorado. - very
wonderful place.
Was granted extended Liberty until 8;00 AM of 14th.
Made a hurried trip home. Was able to be home from
12:00 AM of 11th to 7:00 AH of 13 th.
Was graduated from Radio School. Still Sea 2/c
Left Boulder, Colo, for San Francisco Receiving Station,
Treasure Island.
Arrived Treasure Island Receiving Station.
Departed San Francisco aboard USS Rochambeau
Crossed Euator and became a Shellback.
Arrived Ngume a. New Caledonia, went ashore to report to
receiving station.
Reported on board USS McCawley, troop transport, for
duty. Radio Gang: Herman Radloff, Bob LaPlante, DEW ING
Russell Bowman, James C. I ing, Frank Kushner, Theodore
Kirkland, Chief John Center, Harold Leyden, Art ward,
R. B. Smith, Charles Hebert, and Myself. Later came
Stroud and Perry.
Departed oumea
—Arrived Guadalcanal , Solomons • Islands. ent ashore for-
first time.
Arrived I oumea. During interval,just passed, ade three
trips to Guadalcanal from Noumea.
Made recreation party to beach, hile playing "Touch
Football’ broke ny right wrist.
During this time, we stayed in Noumea harbor training
"Sea-Bees" in landing operations on beach near harbor
entrance. Very Dull time. Made a few liberties in
oumea.
Departed from Toume a enroute to Guadalcanal to put Staff
of Commander Third Amphibious Forces ashore and take on
Army roops in preparation for landings on Rendova Is.
Jap planes were looking for us that night. Went to GQ
about 6:30 PM until 11:30 PM. Japs dropped flares, but
did not locate convoy. Screening Destroyers on outer
fringe fired and drove them off.
Arrived at Guadalcanal.
Departed Guadalcanal for Efate, New Hebrides. Enroute
e received reports of large air attack on Solo ons in
which 97 of 108 attacking planes were shot down.
Arrived Efate, New Hebrides, anchored in Vila Harbor.
Stayed iii harbor until approximately June 24th during
which time we were training the troops in landing oper-
ations.
Departed Efate,
Arrived Guadalcanal in Morning. Here we took on Staff
Commander Third Amphibious Force for Operation on
Rendova Island.
