Description

  • Content Description: Photograph of the USS Pennsylvania (BB-38) (back), USS Downes (DD-375) (left), and the USS Cassin (DD-372) (right) in Dry Dock Number 1 in the aftermath of the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. The dry dock is flooded in an attempt to stop fires and filled with debris. All three ships were damaged in the attack; the Pennsylvania took damage to her gun, and the Downes and Cassin were both considered lost, though were rebuilt with new hulls at Mare Island by November 15, 1943 and February 5, 1944 respectively. The Pennsylvania, a Pennsylvania class battleship, is seen mostly intact and above water. There are flags flying from her mast The Downes, a Mahan class destroyer, while mostly above water, has taken severe damage to her hull and her mast has completely collapsed. The Cassin, also a Mahan class destroyer, is mostly sunken and lists starboard and rests against the Downes' port side. She has also taken severe hull damage. On the right of the dock is a crane and in the distance the USS Helena (CL-50), also damaged in the attack. On the left are buildings and people looking on the ships in the flooded dock. In front of the dock are two more men looking at the ships and guard rails damaged by the attack. Behind the dock, smoke from the sunken USS Arizona (BB-39) can be seen. In the far distance is Ford Island and the USS Maryland (BB-46) and USS Oklahoma (BB-37).
