Did you know thai in the gen-
eral election to be held next
month that one of the most im-
portant amendments that has
ever come before the voters of
Texan will be voted upon. That
amendment is to do away with
the present clause in the Con-
stitution which states that no
school district oan vote more
than 50 oents on the 9100 valua-
tion of property.
The city schools have been
able to get around this amend-
ment by having special charters
made which will give them the
power to vote more money if they
deem it necessary. Now we want
you to understand that we are
not asking you to vote a greater
tax, you are merely asked to
vote for the amendment which
will allow any progressive com-
munity to vote more if that
community «o desires. Is that
not in keeping with the great
principles of both parties?
Republicans, do you know
what your candidate who Í9 run-
ning for governor ofthis«reat
state has said in regard to thin
amendment? No. Well he has
said that he would rather that a
Republican should fail to vote
for him than to fail to vote for
this amendment. So you sec
that he is in perfect sympathy
with this great movement which
means so much to the school
children of this state. You will
not Immn^ doing your dut.v if you
fail to vote for this amendment.
Democrats, do you know that
this is one of the planks in the
Democratic platform and that
the Democrats of this state have
i pledged themselves to vote for
this amendment? The Demo-
cratic candidate for governor is
strong for this amendment.
Do you know that tne legisla-
tures of the future will not make
any more $4.000,000 appropria
lions to keep the present $14 50
per capita apportionment? There
will be no surplus to tide over
another emergency. There are
thousands of children in Texas
tli.it are not in school today be-
cause the teaching profession
has quit and have gone to work
doing something that will en-
iible them to make a living.
Vou in Caldwell do not know
how hard it was for your super-
intendent and school board to
get teachers this year. I sin
eerely hope that you will not, but
I fear that you may feel the short-
age of teachers as most of the
other schools in the state are
doing.
Women, do not fail to pay your
poll tax and do not fail to see that
your neighbor does the same,
(jo to the polls and see tiiat this
amendment is passed. Talk it
in your clubs, your missionary
societies, your patriotic orders,
your civic organizations and par-
ent teacher's meetings. Give
your child a fair deal. It is our
duty at. tin1 school to make citi-
zens. We eiin do no more than
you are willing for us to do.
Will you doit?
W. II. Alexander.

Little Hope Cobk, Jr.
Friday night at 8 o'clock little
Hope Cobb, J r., aged 8 years, 0
months and 24 days, died at its
parents home here after a long
illness, his ailment baffling the
skill of four physicians who did
everything in their power to re-
lieve the little sufferer and bring
him back to health, and during
the past few days of bis illness
he was thought to be improving,
then came the collapse on
Friday and he sank rapidly until
bis little spirit took its ñight to
Qod who gave it, and his suffer-
ing snded. He was such a bright,
friendly little fellow that every-
one loved him, and lie always
recognized you wherever he saw
you, which for one so young, b.i-
deared him to you all the more,
and his taking away is a great
shock to his parents, Hobe Cobb
and wife, his grandparents, J. F.
Cobb and wife and J. A. Gray
and wife, besides numerous
other relatives. The funeral ser-
vices were conducted by Revs.
Carrington(and Williams at their
home Sunday afternoon, after
which his remains were con-
veyed to Masonic cemetery and
laid away in a tiny grave, the
little mound of which was be-i
decked with beautiful Moral offer-1
lugs from sympathizing loved i
ones. Tlw Ledger in common
with the entire citizenship, ex-
tends its sincere condolence to
the bereaved ones in their sad
hour of trouble.
