Anna. Tex., Mar 15 9f>.—Edi-
tor Democrat :
In the last issue of The Demo-
crat, there was an article from
your Princeton correspondent (J.
F. S.)which was forcible enough
to satisfy the most enthusiastic
"white ribboner."
J. F. S. and 1 are in perfect ac-
cord as to the evils of the rum
traffic, but there is a cla*s of pre-
tended prohibitionist(J. F. S. I
hope is n< t one of this class,) in
this country with whom I have
very little patience, and not a
great deal of confidence. 1 refer
to that class who vie with one an-
other in heaping epithets upon
the saloonist, then turn right
about and pledge themselves to
support a political machine that
is dependent, to a great extent,on
the rum dealing element for their
, success and who will favor and
| abet them in ffteir nefarious busi-
ness. The attention of any who
doubt the truth of the above, to
the recent ruling from the Attor-
ney General's office; the people
were made believe that the pri-
mary election was legalized for
the purpose of suppressing fraud
and now comes the Attorney Gen-
eral and rules that saloons do not
have to close on primary election
day nor the man who sells it in
bottles in connection with other
business, on regular election day,
but of course the man who would
be influenced by strong drink to
vote against his convictions, would

ed. if even thought of by this
class, that when ttoubh. and star-
vation comes with the weak and
wieked mortal and other efforts
fail to appease hi- hunger, or lull
his pain then it is that he in driv-
en to theft of any thing he ran
pawn for enough of the tien li<j-
ld to drown his misery and thi-
cla-s are more numerous than
one might suppose. Tin- writer
once heard an evangelist
tell an anecdote illustrating tin-
evil in the church -aid he: "A
% isititig minister before rommciie-
ing his ili-cour.-e wa- approached
bya leading member of the rhuri h
who said. "Bro. A. please don t
s«\ anything against the banks in
your sermon, banker B. isa mem-
ber of our church and i- a ven
liberal giver, another -aid: Bro.
A. don't say anything about the
saloons in your sermon. Mr. C.
if a saloon keeper and donate-
very liberally for the i a>t r- -alary
missionsect. We would regret very
much if you should hurt his fel l-
ings, so Bro. after Bro. had his
special trade to be exempted un-
til the bewildered pastor in the
midst of very adverse circumstan-
ces, exclaimed to the last peiitnm-
er, what in the world can I preach
about! "Oh give the Mormons
hell." said the last comer and at
that time there wasn't a Mormon
known to be in a radius of a
thousand miles. So we can see
the same disposition to attack
only such evils as are unpopular
while others that are no less dis-
tructive of right, peace and hap-
piness are by <ilent approval en-
couraged. In the menioriable
campaign of 187H the writer was
on the side of prohibition, and
the so-called democratic party was
represented on the anti side by
the then greatest man of their
state leaders, R. Q. Mills and
many others of little less caliber.
The writer then saw no righteous
reason why prohibition should uot
triumph; and has seen no reason
since to change his convictions,
confirmed as they were by the
foui means employed by the 'True
Blue' crowd in the campaign of
1878. Nor has he since seen any
redeeming features in the party
whose action and platform is
shaped by the ring. Is it not
time the people whom Christ said
should be a peculiar people and
who dare to wear the name ot
Christ, begin to understand the
example of Christ, who scourged
the money changers out of the
temple and denounced corruption
all its phases. Will it ever
