This year besides some county wide races for dif-
ferent positions in our county government will be the
seats of Erika Rodriguez and Arthur E. Piper, on the
Rio Grande school district board of trustees.
Many have indicated they will seek the two posts
but none have officially announced.
It's always interesting to know that many who want
the post are seeking to better the school district
situation and even more interesting is the few that
attend the school board meetings.
Many say they don't have time to attend every meet-
ing and we wonder how they'll find time to attend the
meetings if elected, which are set for every second
Mondaj of the month.
Piper has for the most part served good on the
board. Although he has failed to show up at important
and controversial meetings to avoid the major deci-
sions, he has done a good job for the district. His one
ambition was to get the district a lighted baseball
field but through the years this has been impossible.
The district has enough money to pay some of Piper's
cronies 13 grand but not enough to light up a baseball
field.
Maybe Piper has expected too much from the sports
program. They (sports) gets a $35,000 budget every
year to support football, basketball, baseball, track
and the physical education classes. The district's
tax-man gets almost half of that for his salary alone.
Piper, we understand, will not seek re-election for
the post but will seek to serve on the water board.
Erika on the other hand has managed to keep the
"opposition" on their toes about the hiring practices.
She has fought for many years for the district and its
students. Her only objective has been to keep every-
thing above board and in some way lias managed to
keep everything on her part above board.
Her eternal "would you explain that. . . I'm con-
fused. . ." has made it easy for the people to under-
stand the hidden flaws behind some of the hiring
practices.
She is undecided about another term. We under-
stand that throughout her term she has been pres-
sured and threatened.
Some os us may think that there Is a need for
change, but let us beware of who runs our schools and
remember that all change is not growth, as all move-
ment Is not forward.
