SHEEHAN TALKS OUT.
The Bow That is Raised Between
Tammany Leaders is Likely to
Split the Democratic Party in New
York State. Hill and McLaughlin
Are in the Row.
New York December 9. There is
a row on at Tammany hall which may
result in a split ia the democratic
party of the state. How Richard
Croker resumed the active leader
ship of Tammany and turned down
Sheehan has for some time been a mat
ter of hito-y. The trouble now is
paid to have started with the hostility
on the pa'-t of bheehan to Hugh J.
Grant. Grant stands closer to Croker
than Sbeehan ever did. So when
Sheehan eat on Grant Croker came to
Grant's aid and bcoted Sbeehan.
Sbeehan landed with a dull thud on
the pavement outside at wigwam but
a Sbeehan was allowed to remain the
nominal head of Tammany's finance
committee the episodedid not at once
come into public notice. Sheehan
said he was going away for his health
but ram ma y men laugbta ana saia it
was a case ol fractured political
pelvis" Sheehan has however re
covered from the first effects of bis
contact witb the damp sidewalk and
says be will fight. He declared last
ni?hf '"1 have been absolutely loyal
to Tammany ball. I have nothing to
apologize for or explain away. I am
cot going to resign. Just now my
health de.tands th.it I take a rest and
tbat Is a'l there is to it."
There are 'wo other p litical leaders
who are trying to keep out of Croker's
graveyard. Tbey are Div d B. Hill and
Hugh Mclaughlin. So the coming
fight may see . Murphy Croker and
Grant on one s?de and Hill Sheehan
and McLaughlin on the other.

were today given a private viiw of the
nrw slot machine lor the filling of ex-
hausted t'l-e'. patents for which were
recently issued It is somewhat simi
lar to the oral car y slot machine but
instead of producing candy gum or
music it .ha a large reservoir filled
with compressed air which can be re
filled as often as required in the store
or saloon in which it may be stationed.
An English penny or two cents in
American money will' cause the ma
chine to part with sufflolout compressed
air to fill the largest size tire. The
invention will be of incalculaole value
to cyclists especially in the country.
districts and orders for over 10000 of
the machines have already been received.
New Game Invented.
Springfield Mass. D cember 9.
Dr A Halted of the Young Men's
Christian association has invented a
new indoor wiuter game wh'ch prom-
ises to b'C ime deo'dedlv popular
among c'ubs ar d athletic associations.
It has been christened "Bombard
ment'' and is played with Indian clubs
and a basket of vclly balls. Two balls
are used where a quick game is desir-
d. Any number on a side can play
the game. The clubs are ranged on
opposite sides of the gymnasium and
the objects of the game are to knock
down the opponent' club while defend-
ing one's own. It afford very vigor-
ous exercise requires agility and ac
curacy is easier to learn and much less
rough than basket ball.

of trouble at the navy department and

and has alo been productive of much
musement among the friends of Amer
ica lbe Spanish naval eogtnerscry
out loud that fraud was perpetrated
in England. The dock cost one million
dollars.
Locusts in Cyprus.
London December 9 There baa
been r. ceived here a copy of a dispatch
to the B: itieh gove-cment from Sir W.
Sendell high commissioner of the
British government in Cyprus where
there is an annual plague of locusts
and in which be takes the ground ttat
the onlv sure method of extermination
is the gathering and destruction by
fire of the eggs of the insects. The
dispatch also shows tbat in the past
six years the British government has
expended nearly szuu.uuo in bounties
for locust eggs on tbat island with the
remit that the plagues are yearly
iminisbing in extent.

Scoring Henry C Richards for his
Abuse of the United States.
London December 9. Henry C.
Richards To-y member of parliameo
for Finsbury East one of the London
districts has been deluged with mark
ed copies of papers ct iticizing him for
his recent attack upon the United
States and in the course of which he
declared tbat that country is one of
the places tbat he never wants to see
again on account of the lack of po'ite
ness of the people. Strangely enough
i he Tory Commoners press critics ara
nearly all domestic or colonial the
papers of the United States having
seemingly ierored both himself and
bis tirade. Tbe latter however has
attracted attention as far away as Aus
tralia and the Times of Sidney Ne
Soutb Wales waxes editorially ear
castle at Richards' expense. Among
o her .things it saye "What has
Brother Jot athan been doing to Mr.
R chsrds? Did they omit to interview
bim and contentedly ignore his
presence? It seems almost inoreiible
that tbey should fail to take advant
age of bis visit to ascertain what be
thought of American and republican
institutions it seems it must be so
and America must now take a back seat
in the scale of nations for surely she
cannot exist much longer if Mr.
Kicnaras declines to go there any
more it seems a pity tbat such a pre
minent country should risk its future
for lack of a decent civility to a gentle
man of such importance as Mr.
R chards but it is to be hoped that he
will not make the whole nation suffer
for what after a'l was but the fault of a
few individuals. Perhaps however.
when tbe Washington government is
aware; of the peril to which the state is
is exposed it will cable an apology
and request the London legislator to
once more do them tbe honor of paying
nem a visii."
Laborers in Canada.
London. December 9 There Is
considerable feeling in different parts
of Wales as a result of the receipt of
aree numbers of letters from Imicrants
to Canada telling grfevious stories of
tbeir experiences and some of them
going so far as to say that tbey would
be justified in cursing the day when
they were induced to emigrate to the
dominion. Most of the letters come
from navies or railroad laborers. One
of the latest letters received in Cardiff
from a miner who emigrated from that
city and is now working on a railroad
near Crow's JNest has created a sen-
sat'oo especially as several parties are
in process or rormation with the view
of emigrating to the dominion next
spring. Tbe letter is a lenghty one.
but its principal plaint Is as follows:
"We are nearly ZOO miles away from
any town. We have to find our own
blankets buckete brushes and light.
and everything costs five times as
much as you have to pay at home. We
have to walk fourteen miles to poet
thi letter aid get paid only once a
month then they keep fifteen days in
hand so that tbey can easily give one
dollar and a half a day. If yon know
of anybody coming on let tbezn know
that they may come over for 4 pounds
17 shillings six pence but that arreat
care will be taken they do not get away
from here as it will cost about fifteen
pounds in railway fares. I have seen
any number of Welshmen here but
they are leavine as fast as they come.
only to starve on the prairie."
Irish Political Prisoners.
London December 9 Among tbe
government papers just issued is a re
port of the inspectors of prisons wbiob
gives a complete list of the Irish poli-
itical prisoners in whose behalf the
na'ionalist members of parliament
made a pathetio but unsuccessful ap-
peal ehortly before the celebration of
the the queen's jubilee. Confined in
Portland prison there are Henry Dal-
ton Henry Wilson Henry Burs Ter
ence Mcuermott Timothy reather-
stone and Patrick Fhtnnagan. The two
last named are officially designated as
'insane." Another unfortunate John
Duff is an inmate of the Broadmoor
criminal lunatic asylum. The list of
those confined in Irish prisons Is made
np as follo ws: Joseph Mullett James
Fitzrarris Lawrence Hanlon . Mat-
thew Mullin and Matthew Kinsella.
Tbis is a total of twelve political pris

were crowded with passengers. The
fog was so thick tbat tbe engineers
could not see five feet ahead of them.

the final dissolution will come no one
testes to venture an opinion.

Spanish. It is said that nearly fifteen
such hangings have already taken
place throughout the island.
JNews of tne movements of General
Pando are awaited with nervous ex
pectation. Tbe rumors tbat be has
been killed continue to circulate
varied by stories that be bad been
wounded or captured by the rebels.
The Hawaiian Annexation Treaty.
Washington December 9. Many
democratic senators are urging the
annexatian of Hawaii be made a party
question ana to that end tbey are
working to nave the entire strength of
the psrty thrown azaiost tbe treaty.
It was announced on excellent authori
ty tbis morning that Senators Mor
gan Pettus and Gorman will vot for
annexatii n under the circumstances.
Other democrats will follow their lead
and tbe present indications are tbat the
question will be lifted out politics.
Friends of the treaty declare tbat tbe
opposition is Deinir proposed by and
gets most its support from the
sugar trust senator raker said to
day that the vote for tbe treaty will
probably be close but he declined to
make the prediction on the outcome.
A careful poll of tbe senate shows that
fifty senators or ten less tban tbe ne
cessary two-tbirds. will probably vote
for annexation.

While the committee appointed by the
congress of the Argentine Republic to
take evidence concerning ways
ol exterminating the locusts is holding
two meetings weekly the plague of
the-e destructive insects in increasing

No portion of the Argentine Republic
is free from their ravages. The parks
have not only been stripped of -grass
and nower but giant trees have ac-
tually been denuded of their branches.
me agricultural communities are in a
state of semi-panic and .even commer
cial trade and speculation has been af
fected in some districts tbey are
less destructive tban in others. All
known means of extermination have
been employed by tbe colonists and
while some have been fairly success
ful in others they have seemed only to
increase tee evil.

CIVIL SERVICE.
The Senate Committee will Recom-
mend Important Modifications.
Washington D. C December 9.
The senate committee on civil ser-
vice which has taken much testimony
regardidg the classification extensions
made by President Cleveland and the
oreration of tbe law as applied to tbe
various branches of tbe service will
resume its investigations tomorrow
taking up particularly the Internal
revenue service. It is stated to be like-
ly tbat the final report of tbe commit-
tee will ba made to the senate earlv in
January and it is believed some im
portant modifications of the system
will be recommended. Senator Prit-
cbard of North Carolina chairman of
the committee says that there is a
demand for some modification of the
civil service cla8'fication by legisla
tion or otbeiwise and such action
seems necessary to keep the measore
from being weighted down. "A too
broad extension" he says "Is calculat-
ed to weigh it down and render it un-
popular thereby endanging its con-
tinuance. A good principle to adopt
would be that a scholastic examination
is proper to determine the fitness of
persons for clerical positions but such
a test is not suitadle to determine the
fitness of a man to fill a position whera
the duties are executive. The idea
tbat the law is a sort of blanket to
cover everything is very unpopular."
Dr. Gunsaulus Resigns.
Chicago December 9 A confer
ence of delegates from all the Congre-
gational churches in Chicago this
afternoon decided to accept the resig-
nation of Rev. Frank Gansaulus. tha
eloquent young pastor of Plymouth
church snd who for several months
has been confined to his bed in a Mich-
igan sanitarium. It was represented
to the council upon the authoritv of hia
physicians that he shou'd be relieved
of every feeling of responsibility and
tbat bis health and life's happiness de-
pended upon such relief. The council
therefore had no alternative but to ac-
cept the resignation. ' . Dr. Gunaalua
baa attained a national reputation as a
thinker and orator during his pastorate
of Plymouth church and in his present
affliction has the sympathy of people
of all denominations. Tbe pulpit will
probably be filled by supply for some
time to come. - Dr. Gunsaulus -is also
