Making History-Providing Hope
My Sisters in Linkdom,
Writing these "open" letters is never easy. This one I have written and rewritten over and over.
Should the tone be folksy, formal, newsy, inspirational or down-to-earth, issue oriented? I finally
decided to just tell you what's on my mind and heart, down-to-earth, issue oriented!
I'm sure it won't surprise you that the issue which concerns me most is the purchase of a building
to house our national headquarters. The 1982 Assembly voted that the first priority of this
administration would be that purchase. I take this directive seriously. The Assembly, your delegate
included, (for it was a unanimous) vote gave the directive but failed to provide any funds for this
purchase. You told us to be creative. We have no power to tax, we have no source of funds except
you, our members. Therefore, in January of 1983, the Executive Council initiated a Capital Funds
Drive. We asked that each Link give $100.00 over a two-year period-$4.16 per month for two
years. We further invited Links who were willing and able to become special donors.
The initial response, especially that of the Executive Council was excellent. Three Links pledged
$10,000.00 each, two pledged $5,000.00 and many others became special donors. Our January
newsletter reflected over $70,000.00 in pledges. An excellent beginning.
We set as goals for this drive $100,000.00 per Area. We asked that all pledges and the first half of
contributions be in the office by April 1, 1983. By April 1, 1983, we had received $119,350.00 in
pledges-of that amount $53,667.73 had been paid. Our Area Directors asked that we extend the
deadlines to the dates of the various Area Conferences. We have extended the deadline to July 1,
1983, a few days prior to the Western and Central Area Conferences.
This newsletter will reflect all contributing. Is your name or the name of your chapter in this issue?
Sister Links, we cannot buy a building on reputation and image-it takes money! This building will
be a symbol of Linkdom in the nation's Capital. It will represent you and me, and will belong to us.
Less than $5.00 per month for a two-year period is no big request. Please help us to buy a building
reflective of our reputation, style and good taste.
Several chapters have responded 100%-each Link pledged. I have asked each chapter President
to collect pledges of her members and report them as soon as possible. On July 1, 1983, the Site
Selection Committee will have to move swiftly to identify a building and start to negotiate for it's
purchase. Our lease runs out on October 1, 1983.
Sister Links, I am depending on you, for if every Link does her part and does her best we will be
"Through The Door in '84."
